Taxi Season 4

Post by AjK »

In case there are any fans of the old sitcom Taxi on KW, here is some news. After much delay (the reason for which has been the subject of some debate) they have finally released the fourth season on DVD. For me Season 4 was the funniest of the lot with a few heart-string tuggers thrown in as well. The episode in which Iggy's father has died is both funny and very touching. Christopher Lloyd's solo scene at the end of the episode was tremendously well done, IMO. Just thought the Taxi fans should know...

I absolutely loved that show! My favorite episode was the one where Rev. Jim was taking the taxi drivers exam.

I still laugh hysterically when I see it.

I still love the one where Jim is the replacement pianist at Elaine's party.

Seems like the Ignatowski-centric episodes are the ones that stand out over time. Christopher Lloyd was brilliant.

Ooh, I think I remember this one. He was in a mansion for the will reading or something?

Haven't see any of Taxi in a lot of years, but, yea, the Jim-centric and Latka-centric ones were the best I recall. I always liked Simka, she was great next to Latka

Apologies up front. This episode is actually in Season 5 (so I guess I will have to wait a little while longer.) But Season 4 is still chock full of goodies. An episode guide for all 5 seasons with short summaries can be seen at www.bttf.com/taxi.htm

Anyway, the episode in question is called Jim's Inheritance". There was also a court scene in which the judge has to make a ruling on whether or not Jim is mentally fit enough to receive his inheritance (his father was very wealthy) or if he needs to have it paid out in a monthly stipend. Jim doesn't care about the money per se but feels that giving it to him in full was his dad's way of saying that he loved him and trusted him. The final scene was not a will reading scene but rather a scene where Jim has returned to his apartment with a box of "stuff" that his dad left him.

Warning - complete spoiler follows:
Spoiler
Jim is absolutely devastated when the court rules that he is incompetant and will not receive the full inheritance as his father wished. Jim and his dad had been at odds and had not spoken for years. His dad was very disappointed in the direction that Jim's life had taken. The episode's last scene finds Jim back at his apartment crushed with disappointment and almost in tears. He doesn't even want to open the trunk of items that his father left him. He finally opens it and starts taking things out. One item was his father's wedding tuxedo. Jim unfolds the pants and holds them up. Since Jim's dad was extremely overweight the pants are absolutely huge. Jim's classic line was "Dad was so proud that after all these years he could still fit into them." Jim goes on to find a cassette tape in the tuxedo pocket. Confused as to why it was there he pops it into his tape player. The Stevie Wonder song You are the Sunshine of My Life begins to play. Jim pauses momentarily and then a big smile crosses his face as he comprehends his dad's final message. He sits down to relax and listen to the song. The money meant nothing compared to his father's love and approval. I defy anyone who had an issue with their father to watch it and not get a lump in their throat. Great episode.

Of course! Wasn't that the one in which Jim became the "ultimate cabbie" once he got hooked on Dynamic Perfectionism?
