Anyone seen this ?
Or even heard of it ?
Great film, one of the best sci-fi flicks I've seen in years; unfortunately it has only had a very limited release here in Australia but it is a fine film.
Directed and co-written by Duncan Jones (who just so happens to be David Bowie's son !), and made on a shoestring budget (erm, a paltry $5 million haha), it's a thought-provoking movie with echoes of 2001, Bladerunner and Silent Running. And yet it is entirely it's own entity ..
To describe too much of the plot would be to give away too many suprises; the basic set-up sees lone spaceman Sam Bell (Sam Rockwell, always great but absolutely superb in this film) as the lone employee on a lunar mining base nearing the completion of a 3-year contract.
His only company is a Hal-like computer, Gerty (voiced by Kevin Spacey).
with 2 weeks to go on his 3 year contract, and his lonely mind apparently starting to play tricks on him, Sam falls foul of an accident which triggers a strange series of events.
Go and see it if you can find it, especially if you're a Sci-Fi fan !!!

it's only showing in 4 cinema's in Melbourne, which is criminal when shite like Transformers 2 is shown in every theatre available ...
Moon played here in July for only a week or two, but I managed to go to it. The presence of Gerty does invite comparisons to 2001: A Space Odyssey, but to me, Moon is more like Solaris - I mean Soderbergh's version, not Tarkovsky's. But anyway, I agree that Moon is a fine, thoughtful film. Sam Rockwell's performance is very affecting. And yes, it's remarkable that this movie was made for a mere $5 million.

I lucked out and managed to see it in my college town the last day they were showing it! It was one of the best movies I've seen in a while, considering that it is pretty much a one man performance! I wonder when it's coming out on DVD....

I saw this at the Brisbane International Film Festival in August, and it was one of the stand-out films there. I'd vote it as possibly the best science fiction movie in decades. The director said that he made the film partly as a protest over why people don't take serious themes in sci-fi seriously.
I loved it.

So-so flick, mildly entertaining; but wish I rented rather than bought. And why was Gerty so damn filthy when everything else was new-car clean? Good moon fx.
Spoiler
And it was very improbable, and downright unlawful to do what the company did.

The film doesn't seem to have much to it, despite what I've read.

Well, just watched it, for the first time. Was good, not perfect, but good. I haven't cried like that watching a film in a very long time.Montresor wrote:In that case, I'd suggest watching the film again, and paying more attentionjacob Raver, sinTempter wrote:The film doesn't seem to have much to it, despite what I've read.

you thought it was 'good' (not perfect) yet you wept as you haven't in a long time - what were they, tears of indifference ??jacob Raver, sinTempter wrote:Well, just watched it, for the first time. Wait...you think a decent film can't have a great scene in it?

The scene where he sees his original's 15 year old daughter, and also when #6 put him back in the rover.

Fantastic film. Entirely character-driven, with the science fiction elements used merely as a way to provide the conflict and set-up. Just like good s.f. should be. It's not about the technology. It's not about a philosophical though experiment. It's about what it means to be human. We don't have be in Sam's unique (or not!
) position to be confronted with loneliness, reliance upon idealized memories and expectations, expendablility in a corporate world, or the problem of identity.
Spacy's Gerty was a nice contrast to Hal. He went in an entirely unexpected direction.

Gerty was dirty, I believe, because he was the only piece of equipment that doubled as a personal groomer and (self-moving) coaster for his open-top coffee mug .And why was Gerty so damn filthy when everything else was new-car clean?

I had high hopes for this movie after seeing everyone's reactions on here, but I found the entire plot predictable and obvious.
Unfortunately, I didn't find anything in the movie other than the plot, so it left me a little underwhelmed
