Spy movies

Post by Fist and Faith »

Anybody got recommendations? Not action-spy flicks, mind you. No James Bond stuff. I don't want explosions and shootouts. Yeah, spys kill and are in danger all the time. But I'm talking about intellectual.

If you can find a copy of The Spy Who Came in From the Cold, you'll be doing yourself quite a favour. Great film. Damn good book too.

Thanks, folks. North by Northwest is showing up on almost all the lists I've googled. The Spy Who Came in from the Cold is first on a couple of those lists. No Way Out is popping up some.

I've heard Three Days of the Condor is a good one.

I bring this all up because I saw Spy Game a few weeks ago. I liked it, especially because it wasn't a martial arts/explosion extravaganza.

Here are my suggestions for the non-Bond type of action spy film:

- 39 Steps (Hitchcock 1935)
- Ipcress File
- Hunt for Red October (does that count?... Ryan is employed by a spy agency)
- Sneakers
- Ronin
- Mr & Mrs. Smith (I threw that one in there 'cause it's just so darn fun!)

I've only seen that once, but I did enjoy it. I'd say it's worth a watch.

Excellent film.
