I think that's the one, yeah.

There's nothing more frustrating to me than playing Team Fortress 2 when I have a toon that shoots. I feel like I just get in a position to aim and then I die. Everything happens so quickly.

I tend to panic-spray (actually, that phrase sounds a little unhygienic). If someone catches me by surprise, I open fire frantically, but seldom manage any accuracy. I probably seem like I'm terrible at everything.

I'm much more effective with semi-auto weapons like pistols and some rifles. With that kind of gun, I manage to drag my standard up to below average rather than dire.

I think I'm the same way when caught by surprise. I stand in one place and fire my gun. I'm too surprised to run away or anything. Man.....shooting games are stressful!

I sort of like being a sniper and sitting outside of the action, being able to take time to make a good shot. Though, I hate it when they move all the time. If they'd just sit still and let me shoot them!

*shakes head* I guess I just shouldn't play shooting games. Bad for my soul.

Yes, I like to be a sniper too, when I get the chance. It gives me time to aim. Unfortunately, people usually know where all the good sniper nests are, so they come and find me once they realise what I'm up to. Either that or someone who's a better sniper starts taking shots back at me (resulting in what GameSpot called 'the over-romanticised sniper class plinking away at each other from a distance' ).

I do manage to dodge and/or make a run for it when caught by surprise, but I do it while trying to fight back. The result is that my movement throws my (already mediocre at best) aim off badly, and my firing slows my escape - and I end up failing on both counts. Bah. Jack of no trades, master of minus one.

Needless to say, in Team Fortress 2, I spend most of my time rez'ing and finding a spot to stand and die. I feel like I can logically play the game, but when the time comes to enter a cool combination to get me out of a bad situation, I end up button-bashing. lol

But I could beat you at a racing game! Make no mistake.

Yes, I'm absolutely certain you could beat me at a racing game. I'm guessing you're pretty competent at them; I, by contrast, am worse at racers than almost any other type of game. (The only genre that comes to mind that I'm worse at is strategy games, but that's because I rarely play them).

Ah, the hours spent having a racing-line explained to me on any given GT3 course. lol

I'm not sure I'm good at strategy games either....though, I suppose I'm without an excuse. I've yet to win a session of Civ4 against all Computer Opponents with the "war" setting enabled and I've been playing a lot of Civ4. =/

So what games are you excellent at? For me, I guess my top ones are racing games and WoW (though, is it possible to be "good" at that?).

I don't think I'm excellent at anything.

I used to be very good at Goldeneye, but that was ten years ago. I'm ok at most types of game, but I don't really excel at any. I've always been bad at racers and one-on-one fighting games (Street Fighter/Tekken style stuff), despite having played my share of them. I'm bad at strategy, but I think it's a matter of getting into the habit of thinking ahead. I plan badly. Otherwise...I'm solidly mediocre across the board.

That's kind of depressing actually.

Awww no. It means you haven't given up hours and hours to perfect a racing line instead of studying or reading or.... heh

My Street Fighter skills consist of hitting as many buttons at the same time as humanly possible. Good fun. I'm the master at the random and rare combos that hit for a massive amounts of damage, really pissing off the person who is playing against me the correct way.

You two sound like me, in being bad at strategy and one-on-one fighting games. But I daresay no one could possibly be worse at strategy than me. And yeah, random button mashing was the only way I ever put up any fight against my step brother in Mortal Kombat et al.

Goldeneye was a fantastic game, the gold standard of its kind at the time. I got decent at the single-player mode, but still sucked in multiplayer. Despite my futility, I still enjoyed it immensely.

For sniper action, Unreal Tournament was great fun. I was no real threat with the sniper rifle, but my step brother was a good shot. He could pick off enemies as they were running around, like that sniper dude in Saving Private Ryan.

heres a free game i have been playing for years..i have been playing it since it was a Quake III mod. its called Urban Terror... its a first person shooter, pretty simple there are CTF , FFA , and TDM , if you dont know the terms its Capture the flag CTF, free for all FFA, and Team death match TDM. there are a few others but i mostly stick to those modes of play, snipers, machine guns, Grenades, knives, handguns etc... for weapons.

I finally started Half-Life 2 - Episode Two. I had intended to do it after I finished a replay of Episode One way back, but I lost interest halfway through the replay, heh.

These caves are creepy, and the acid antlions - even though I've played with them on Garry's Mod in the past - are tricky.

Egad. My FPS skills are so rusty these days, it's an embarrassment. I'm sure you'd nail me before I knew what was happening. But thanks for the encouragement, anyway. No promises, but if there's any game I would be motivated to play again, it would be UT.

If you mean the original, I've never managed to get through it. Half-Life 2, though, is well worth trying. I'm no good at FPS games and get nervous with zombies jumping out at me, but the game is really as good as everyone says.

Whew, good to know I'm not alone regarding Half-Life. Glad that HL2 is very good, too. (Over the Christmas holidays, I ought to make some effort to get back into gaming. To WoW or not to Wow, that is the question...whether to suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous online gaming...)

I bought Modern Warfare 2 yesterday.

I beat it last night.

Having tried L4D2, I'm actually considering trading in MW2 for it. I think it might be more fun for me long-term... but I've got to work on the Special Ops and the multiplayer a little longer to decide.

I'm thinking about selling Rainbow Six: Vegas 2 once I finish the solo campaign. The online game has a lot of potential, but the learning curve's so steep it's practically vertical. After playing it fairly regularly for a couple of weeks now, I'm still lucky if I get more than one kill in a match. Maybe my FPS skills just aren't up to it, but there's no sense of gradual improvement. I just don't seem to be getting any better at it. This means every single match in an exercise in futility.

If I sell Vegas 2, I can use the money on one of the older games I've been wanting to try, like Crackdown or Two Worlds.

Just got Phantasy Star 0 for the DS. If you liked Phantasy Star Online, it's pretty much has that feel...only a little better on the fighting system. Haven't tried the online features yet, but will soon (a friend of mine is obessed with the series, and is exicted to try the multiplayer features on this).
