The thing that I find interesting concerning name usage is how Linden always thinks of and speaks of her love by his last name only. In our world, one would use the first name or some form of pet-name, but in the land, she speaks and thinks of her love for Covenant. Has she ever called him Tom? While “Tom” is an ordinary name, Covenant seems to be more in line with names in the land. The word covenant is commonly defined as an agreement or promise; TC was like an uncompromising promise to the land; the Despiser’s enemy to the end.
I think only Joan calls him Tom. Everyone else in the Land in the First Chrons calls him Covenant. Though of course Linden wouldn't know that... And when Dr. Berenford told Linden about him, it was Thomas Covenant.
You make a good point about the name Covenant.
