Berek's capital?

Post by hyarmion »

Has anyone ever thought about this one:

During the High Lordship of Berek and the early years of Damelon, i.e. before Revelstone was built. Where did the Council meet? Which was the capital city?

Maybe they did not have one, may be they just met in a tent, wherever they happened to be.

Just maybe there was something there, a network of caves, a village that got abandoned in favour of Revelstone
If we all follow Berek's code of warriors then the world would be full of the worst warriors imaginable.

Am I not right in thinking that the ruined city of Doriendor Corishev (where Troys Warward makes a tempory stand) was the capitol city of Bereks people in the time of the One Forest.

Doriendor Corishev? (the masterplace)!
It sounds like a Haruchi place.
Or maybe Ramen?

I imagine that Berek spent most of his Lordship traveling and learning and exploring.
Most of his allies at Doriendor Corishev were killed or on the run.
Earthpower was not as strong there so Berek probably never returned.
People would be flocking to him as his fame grew anyway.

In The Illearth War was wrote:But the city had been deserted since the time of Berek, the first Lord.
Certainly Doriendor Corishev was the capitol of that kingdom which desolated the One Forest, and fell into the civil war which Berek fought in.

However, the sentence I quoted above makes it seem unlikely that Berek used the city once he became the first High Lord.

Purely speculating, it feels right to me that the Lords first abode would be somewhere in that are that was later known as Kurash Plenethor, and then Trothgard.

I see this true also.

Berek was away for a time trying to learn and obtain the Staff of Law.
If he defeated the King's forces then who was in charge of Doriendor Corishev
after the war? Most likely it would have been the Queen. But the city was reduced in population. After Berek's return, he may have drawn people away from the city because people found that Earthpower was more appealing than serving in a city, and maybe the Queen has passed on without a heir.

By then the encrouchment of the southern deserts may have made life difficult in Doriendor Corishev. Why stay in a place where it's a hard life and where to the north you have an abundants of food and shelter.

Plus if Berek wouldn't have chosen the city as a new HQ, it would have upsurbed his oath to his Queen.
Berek never saw Revelstone because of the learning , teaching others and his quests. It was his son(Daimen)who met the Giants. (plus his lifespan wasn't greatly increased, he was middle aged and the Eartpower couldn't prolong his life as much as his son's life could be increased or the generations afterwards. Kevin was a 1000 years old(if I recalled correctly) when he enacted the RoD.)

It was Daimen who decided to it was a time for a council to have a home. He chose a council because he lived under the Monarcy that fell into the Ravers influence.

Trothgard for the council of the New Lords seems fitting. Yet Kurash Plenether sounds like another Haruchai place-name they gave to Stricken Stone?

In trying to understand what legends are I looked up St.George and the Dragon on Wiki. I read somewhere that he slew the beast in Beruit, during the time of the Holy Wars????
Wiki says that St.George was a roman soldier who protested at the way the emperor was executing the Christians. He was tried and put to death, making him a martyr for the common people.

The point to all this is that legends might only have the tiniest piece of truth in them. SRD is very sparing about the true stories of the Old Lords and I can never be sure what to believe.
The New Lords also don't know as much as the would like because the Wards were written in an ancient language difficult to translate.

Daimelon?

Where did you get this?
Sounds like fan fiction.

It's hinted that Kevin had a longer lifespan than his father because of his greater knowledge but we don't know for sure.

Well, it's true that the Giant's built Revelstone for Damelon. The ageless castle-city which they had riven out of the rock of the mountain for High Lord Damelon. So Berek would not have seen it. In fact, it seems to me that Berek never actually met the Giants, that they arrived during Damelon's time.

So it would NOT be true that Berek didn't see Revelstone "because of the learning, teaching others and his quests". He didn't see it because it didn't exist.

Still speculation.
Berek might still have been alive during Damelon's High Lordship.
You're not High Lord for life.
Berek could have seen Giants and even seen Revelstone completed.

What if Berek Hearthew was the subject of the Giants legendary tale
Bagoon the Unbearable. Would this make Thelma Twofists - Bereks' mate - Damelon Giantfriend?

Berek Hearthew + Damelon Giantfriend =

<¬ Loric Vilesilencer -> Kevin Landwaster

True enough. But there's nothing that suggests he was. So I think the other way is the way to bet, is all I'm saying.

hmmm.. I think he probably did use the city..unless it held too much bad memory for him... but Revelstone wasnt part of the land until Damelon Giantfriend and if Berek was the Lord Fatherer then after him was Loric and after Loric was Damelon..so he was a grandfather by the time the Giants built Revelstone..and if the lords lived decades like Humans lived regular years.... His Son Loric could possibly have been 400-500 years old before Berek decided he himself was too old to keep on with being Highlord, Loric and Damelon could have been reaaaally old before they even got to become Highlord. assuming Berek Fathered Loric during his younger years of lets say 50-60? we have a window of say 400-500 years that each high lord could have Fathered their sons maybe more.

Berek could have been anywhere from 25 - 500 before Loric was born and same with loric with Damelon and Damelon with Kevin etc....Unless im completely off and Long Life of the Lords did not Occur until Kevins Lore, but I assume the Vow Berek Made with the earth power gave him that same Longevity.

... I imagine berek had to live somewhere but having not read Fatal Revenant I dont know how long Berek was away from the land during the first Staff of Laws Quest. The only mention i remember was of Doriendor Korishev being the Great city of the king and queen until shadow fell upon the king... Trothguard or Kurash Quellenir /or plentethor were created during Kevins time I think..might be wrong on that. for all i know Berek and his line until Damelon could have lived in the area of Revelstone but maybe at that time is was just a simple natural Cave until the Giants carved Revelstone out of it... maybe Berek lived in Melenkurion Skyweir..thats also a possibility.

Lots of gaps to speculate on.

It's also possible that he (Berek) lived in a tent and survived eating aliantha all his remaing days whilst he established the original council of lords.

IMHO, he wouldn't have stayed still very long anywhere as there was still to much of the Land and Earthpower he didn't know.

There is another name in the chronicles index, Lord Valiant!
I'd be interested to know where in the story this Lord is mentioned.
Does anyone know?

Actually, it was Berek, then Damelon, then Loric.
In Lord Foul's Bane was wrote:"Berek Heartthew's son was Damelon Giantfriend, and his son was Loric Vilesilencer, who stemmed the corruption of the Demondim, rendering them impotent." [...] "And Kevin, whom we name Landwaster more in pity than in condemnation of his despair, was the son of Loric, and High Lord in his place when the Staff was passed on.
Which makes it more likely that Berek was around and retired when Revelstone was built, if anything.

To answer the question above about Lord Vailant. According to High Lord Prothall speaking immediately prior to his attempt to lay down the High Lordship after hearing the Despiser's prophecy (which had been delivered to the Council by TC), Prothall (in laying the High Lordship) was following the practice of one High Lord Vailant, who doubted his abilities and laid down the High Lordship about 100 years previous.

No, there was a gap of about 100 years between the Old Lords and the New Lords. Which would have meant that the New Lords had been around for 900 or so years when TC arrived. The Giants took the First Ward with them when they went on a voyage to be away from the Land when Kevin did the Desecration and gave it to the survivors afterwards. The rhadhamerel and the lillianrill had their start during this intermediate period, since they had the lore that kept the people alive during that time. As for Valiant was High Lord only about 100 years before Covenant arrived. He is mentioned in the scene when TC meets with the Council in Revelstone. The only hint to the number of New Lord High Lords comes at the end, when TC, having defeated Foul, encounters about 15 or so spirits along with the Old Lords whom he had "never heard named". (I don't have TPTP in front of me right now)
