Max Brooks - The Zombie Survival Guide and World War Z

Post by Stone Magnet »

Thoroughly excellent for anyone who (like me) is obsessed with zombie films. The Zombie Survival Guide is always a good reference, and perfectly describes how an undead being without dependence on oxygen might function. The best part of this book is the perfect suspension of disbelief it achieves, after I was halfway through I was assessing houses for security, checking for exits and formulating escape plans as if the undead were really about to rise.

World War Z I read in one sitting at my university bookshop, and is an excellent sendup of traditional oral histories. Brooks knows his stuff and has clearly done his research, his alternate world is well realised, and filled with detail. I remember reading an interview where he stated he actually went and interviewed ex-CIA spooks and war veterans to get the feeling of authenticity. The audio book (featuring Henry Rollins and Mark Hamill) is equally good and a true-to-type adaption. The Chinese accents are a bit hokey though...

Any other Z-heads out there?

Check out www.homepageofthedead.com for Zombie stuff.
The Forums are many and I think it has the largest Zombie fiction selection on the Net too. (2 of my stories are there)

Zombie Survival Guide was an entertaining read, but I was much more throughly impressed with World War Z. As Nyarlathotep pointed out, it is very well realized... Max seemed to have thought of literally everything! This actually allowed me to get a sense of what an actual worldwide zombie outbreak would be like. Great stuff.

Haven't read WWZ yet, but I have the ZSG on audio and have listened to it about thirty times.

I wonder if that's why I started carrying a crowbar in my car...
