I don't think so, because the land is (well, at least before Foul up and turns Jack Frost on it) very providing in all manners for the people of the Land, and its effects are restorative, rather than depressive or stimulative.

At first, when Covenant eats some Aliantha, he goes wild, but I think that is just the transition to the lack of subtlety the Land has in its restorative abilities--and also a reflection on, if not the character, the society, that believes nature exists to serve our needs, instead of the middle-way that the Stonedownors and the rest of the denizens of the Land have, where they serve the Land so that it can continue to provide for their needs.

I don't think the Aliantha, or Ambivalam (sp), or Springwine or anything like that has a legitimate addictive quality, and I think the spirit of the Land prevents addiction, on some level.

The Clave got pretty uptight if they thought they weren't going to get their blood supplies. And the Ravers were addicted to Foul's "reek of attar" - apparently empowered and pleasured by his, um, scent. Nobody who got their hands on any bits of the Illearth Stone was keen on giving it up, either.

But Black Asgard is right. The normal people of the land were naturally and culturally protected from addictions, and apparently from a lot of the baser emotions and instincts that exist in our world. The fact that even warriors swore the Oath of Peace, and felt like failures when they broke it, is proof that they operate along very different lines to us.

Hyrim of Hoole had "the appetites of a Giant" for booze and food, if I recall, but he never missed work or anything.

I understand you now, and I agree totally with what you say. Maybe you're a non-English speaker, I had trouble with your grammer - no matter.

Alcoholism is a kinda blindness, I guess. Who in their right mind would turn to drink and drugs when so much health and beauty surrounds them. I believe more important things are at stake in the Land for SRD to be sidetracked with. Don't you agree?

Well I'm sorry you see things that way. I think the TCTC illustrate that there can be something better for us than darkness and evil once we learn not to be intimidated by a flea that is Lord Foul.

:offtopic:

BTW jackgiantkiller, did you choose your KW name from the 1962 film, of the same title?
I actually enjoyed this film despite the awful acting the toy monsters and thin storyline. It was the way the plot was set into a russian-doll structure. I found this so fascinating I scribbled down the ideas in a notebook as fast as I could while I was watching the film. I had planned to use this concept to fashion the rules of magic for a short story I was working on at the time.

Anyway, if all this makes no sense, please ignore.

The Land itself was the drug-Eco-amazing, magical-even before people thought of this stuff, remember, so Nader was kicking around then but, Earth Day was only 8 years young when LFB was initially released (and people didn't really pay attention to Earth Day until the Clinton years).

HAHHA.. LOL but everyone in the land was an Alcoholic, the only time people drank water was while traveling and even then a Giant or someone always had a skin of Springwine or Diamondraught. no one broke out a pipe and started smoking like they did in LOTR though.

Can you OD on Hurtloam or Rillinlure?

actually in the second Chronicles it mentions Santonin or the Na Mhoram aka Raver breathing in the fumes that plumed off the Illearth chip as if it were a narcotic.

I imagine the blood giving of the Waynhim would be pretty addictive..

"I got alot of work to do Dharmakashetra..can you talk to your buddies and see if they would give up some blood/Ichor so i can "Get my work done faster"? of all the things I have read about, that would be the most addictive..and the hardest to come by. though im sure its not physically addictive. the Waynhim would chant the impurities or addictive qualities out of it. though the mind would still remember being able to run 90 miles an hour and being able to jump Giant boulders in a single bound, the only thing better than that would be having wings.
