Finn, what you mentioned about Villain character development is what I hate most about Superhero movies.
Why bother at all?
Guy has a gun that melts metal, calls himself "the Melter" gets caught by Iron Man while breaking into a bank, fight ensues, Iron Man has his armor almost ruined but manages to cover him in fast drying cement or something.
That's it.
I just wrote a fantastic 5 or 10 minute scene that everyone will love and they can sell toys about at Burger King.
Why do we need to know how the Melter made his gun and what his motivation is.
It's a waste of time.
That's why I can never figure out why there aren't a dozen villains in these movies.
That's what I hate most about comic book movies. See, for example, the Batman movies of the 90s, where they were just throwing villains at us.
In the end, I don't care nearly as much about the fact that it's a
comic book movie, as I do about the fact that it's a
movie. Character development, motivations, interpersonal relationships... these help define whether or not a movie is worth watching to me. That's why I think
Avatar is a horrible movie, yet
Watchmen is a great one.
