8O Dang! I almost broke my neck watching u go from rap 2 classical and Prince 2 Zappa! **never though would use Prince and Zappa in same sentence in lifetime!**

I've only listened 2 2 songs off Audioslave's debut album, but that's enuf 2 make them my new fav band! I absolutely LOVE Chris Cornell (lead singer and guitarist 4 Soundgarden) and while all the lyrics 2 Rage Against the Machine songs can sound the same after a while I love RvM's beat and musicianship--now if Santa gives me that CD I'll have the best of both worlds! I also love Nirvana's post-humous "You Know, You're Right" god does the song rock-out! And dead Kurt's vocals give me freaked out goose-bumps! It's like his ghost is floating around the car, or house, whispering in your ear!!!brrrrrr

I was watching an ABBA Special last night (and for all you wits out there, this IS after all New Zealand ;) )

At any rate, they interviewed Bono and he said that ABBA was probably the best pop group ever. I never thought I'd hear that being said :)

I got "The Best of Bowie" for Christmas :) Don't think I need to say more except that I preferred his older stuff.

I'm not going to throw rocks - I own ABBA Gold. :-)

My most recent music pickups still defy your broad catagories, Syl. :-)

About three weeks ago, I saw a documentary on the life of Ravi Shankar, the Indian musician. Afterwards, I bought his cd The Sounds of India. He plays pieces as examples of four different styles of Indian music. At the beginning of each he gives a 1-2 minute explanation geared to the Western listener. It's a good start if you know little about the music.

At the same time I bought a cd Music of Bali/Gamelin and Kecak. Our friends down under may be more familiar with the style, but it's basically an Indonesian orchestra. There is a an emphasis on percussion instruments. Western composers since the late 1800's, in particular Debussy, were greatly influenced by this style of music.

If you like Ravi Shankar you might like Zakir Hussain.

I got the "Spirit" DVD for my daughter, and now I ordered the soundtrack at our local library. I think Bryan Adams did a pretty good job, his songs really make you feel for Spirit.

Heard a new song from a new group on the hard rock station while driving home tonight. It sounded pretty good. The group is called Pacifier and their first recording is coming out this week.
Love as thou wilt.

I'll pass on the R. Kelly! (perv!) 8O :hairs: :haha:
(p.s. Handel's Water Music is fantastic--Yanni's Ethnicity is him conducting and arranging around various artists--not his usual fare)

this is the most comprehensive new release list i could find.

www.billboard.com/billboard/releases/index.jsp

The only thing that caught my eye off hand was Biohazard (not the greatest band ever, but decent) and Ministry. I've seen some reviews for the new album by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds (tho the album didn't appear on the list), and I wouldn't mind giving it a listen. Only song I know of theirs is Red Right Hand off the Music to the Key of X quasi-soundtrack to x-files (most innovative hidden track i've seen, to date).

Ravi Shankar ~ acclaimed as the world's leading sitar player .. I remember some great story about him but not what?? heh. but he had a great influence upon the Beatles .. and I think mostly George Harrison actually .. I think he went to study with him .. which makes sense cos Harrison has a detectable indian influence in some of his work ..

as I say if I can remember this rivetting story .. I'll come back and share it! damn them non-functional brain cells

ok, i remember hearing about him, now. dunno if these will jog your memory, but i googled him and came up with this bio...
www.ravishankar.org/bio_frame.html
and this "interesting story"
userpages.umbc.edu/~achatt1/Bio/ravisankar.html

read the bio, but not the story (would be ruining the telling).
