The eighties saw great stuff by U2, Elvis Costello, XTC, Tears For Fears, Talking Heads, Oingo Boingo, the Police, Dire Straights, and several other excellent bands, which almost offsets the "hair band" stigma the decade has been saddled with. Nevertheless, I prefer the 70's.
