Lord Zombiac - can I just ask, How long ago did you read the books? (It sounds better than asking you how old you are or how long ago you were fourteen. Feel free not to answer this if you prefer not to - no offence will be taken I promise!)
Also I find it interesting that you read the books at 14 and were so taken with them. I was 18 or 19 and also was blown away by them but I think at 14 I may have struggled.
I recently lent the 1st series to a 19 yo I work with (I'm now in my mid fifties by the way) who had really got of on Stephen Kings 'Dark Tower' series, (King cites the Chrons as inspiratorial in his introduction to the series) but he was unable to get into them. He managed about half of LFB before giving up. Just shows - when it comes to reading it is almost impossible to secon guess what another person will or will not like.

I turn 43 in about a week.
Oh it was 1982 when my brother gave me the book "Lord Foul's Bane."
I initially had a dictionary handy, but I couldn't be bothered to put the book down long enough to look up words after the first two chapters!
I stayed up all night reading those books and woke up the next day eager for more!
It only took two or three days for me to consume each volume.
Oddly enough, now that I have the book, I haven't been able to read more than two chapters at a time... still, I'm enjoying it so much. Everything is exactly how I remember it!
It is a wonder how vivid those images have remained in my mind after all these years!

My son, who is also a member of the Watch, though he doesn't post much except in Gravin Threndor, read the first and second chrons at ten. He read The Gap at fourteen...

We had an open policy where he talked about anything about the books with us, if he either didn't understand or found himself uncomfortable. He had no problems with either, though I think much of the chrons flew over his head at that age. He recently did a reread himself of all eight published books, getting ready for AATE, and said he comprehended much more this time around, although he didn't realize he missed what he did the first time.

The two chapters at a time thing - how is that going Lord Zombiac. If I remember rightly two of Donaldsons chapters take a while to get through at the best of times so it doesn't sound too bad. Also, I remember reading Wilkie Collin's book "The Woman in White" one time. It was SO good and full of suspense that I could only read it for short periods because the tension was almost too much to bear; is this like that kind of thing or something else.

your story sounds exactly like mine..were about a year apart in age, I read it at about 13-14 and I couldnt stop reading the book, not even to look up the words I didnt understand, I used to read it by Candle Light to give it a more Landish feel while I was reading. best reading memories i have. my first read through of the entire series was by candle light. I finally stopped doing that because i fell asleep a couple times and awoke to a blazing candle,..nothing caught fire luckily but... anyway, great memories.

Yeah I've been reading two chapters at a time, but not every day. I've been doing a lot of construction work and we've just been so busy finishing moving into the cabin and getting ready for our wedding. Plus I really need to write another chapter of my sequel. I also can't recall a book I've ever enjoyed reading more, but writing my own fiction is like three times more enjoyable than reading anything, even Donaldson!

I would have been 10 or 11 when I first read The Illearth War.. I found it in the school library and just fell in love with the whole thing, then read the whole first chronicles in the correct sequence straight after.
Incidentally it was also the first fantasy series I'd read - I'd been basically just reading sci-fi up til then. And unfortunately since I started with quite possibly the best fantasy epic in existence there hasn't been many series that are comparatively good - except for Le Guin's stuff, which is on a completely different level.

Hey all,

Newbie here. I seem to be a late bloomer, I was about 30 when I stumbled across it because myt other series was not ready with the next book and being from NYC, we ride trains a lot and I needed something to read for the hour commute.

It was a hard read in the beginning for about 1/2 of the book and of course upon reading the rape scene I said to myself "what the hell?" It was already bad enough I was reading about a Leper as the "hero" or main person. I must have wanted to put it down 10 times. Everything else I had read had the usual "elves", wizards, etc, etc. or it was SciFi, but this was something different.

Hi Marineguy,Nice to have you on board - Welcome! Yeah, that first half of the first book thing is common to a lot of people but funnily enough it never happened to me. For some (obviousely deep seated psychological) reason I got hooked at line 1. What was it - something about a woman snatching her kid from the path of a 'gaunt grey man' walking mechanically down the sidewalk toward them. The rape scene sort of made me cringe a bit but even then I could never hate TC, Donaldson had done such a good job of making me empathise with him.

If only everybody would start with TIW.
