Hi Marineguy,Nice to have you on board - Welcome! Yeah, that first half of the first book thing is common to a lot of people but funnily enough it never happened to me. For some (obviousely deep seated psychological) reason I got hooked at line 1. What was it - something about a woman snatching her kid from the path of a 'gaunt grey man' walking mechanically down the sidewalk toward them. The rape scene sort of made me cringe a bit but even then I could never hate TC, Donaldson had done such a good job of making me empathise with him.

I have suggested TC to many people and I follow it up with "YOu'll hate him" curse him, wish him dead, throw the book across the room BUT you'll finish it and love it.

I only had one very "real answer" My son's friend said'

"Why am I reading about a Leper who rapes a women and one of the Great Lords is named "Kevin"." Really if you think about it, it reminds me of that movie "Mom and Dad save the Universe" and the villain was "Todd" from the planet of Todd.

Hi everyone Newbie here. I read the Chronicles when they were first released I was 20 at the time. I was introduced to them via Radio Luxembourgh a pirate radio station anchored out in the North Sea. To get clear reception I had to stick my finger in the back of my old transistor radio and point to the east. One night as my finger grew numb one of the DJ's started to read the first chapter and urged everyone to go buy the book. At the end of his reading my finger was dead and my arm sore, but next week I found the books. Now 34 years later I'm re reading and they are even better than the first time. If you haven't read them for a long time I urge you to do so, I have found so much pleasure in re reading.

Welcome, DroolRockworm! And thanks for sharing, I always get something new out of the Chronicles each time I read them.... few books are as powerful through several re-reads.

Hi Drool - Nice to have you on board. Wow, I remember Radio Luxenberg too! Your numbers would put you at about the same age as me so I'm guessing we were listening at about the same time. (I'm guessing you're UK as well because I'm not sure there would have been too many RL listerers 'stateside'). Any recall as to who the DJ was? What about the 2nd trilogy and the beginnings of the third - have you read those yet or did you loose track after the first series and have the pleasure of catching up with the 2nd yet to come (many people rate it more highly than the first).
Anyway - great to welcome you to the site. Great people with some really deep knowledge and insight into the Chrons.

I would have been 10 or 11 when I first read The Illearth War.. I found it in the school library and just fell in love with the whole thing, then read the whole first chronicles in the correct sequence straight after.
Incidentally it was also the first fantasy series I'd read - I'd been basically just reading sci-fi up til then. And unfortunately since I started with quite possibly the best fantasy epic in existence there hasn't been many series that are comparatively good - except for Le Guin's stuff, which is on a completely different level.

If only everybody would start with TIW.

Actually I have had more success in getting friends interested in the series by having them read TIW than the ones starting with LFB. But it is a big ask to get book lovers to start reading a series from the 2nd book..

When they read TIW first and go back to LFB they'll be aware of the rape scene and other incidences of TC behaving terribly from the first book, and will be more accepting of it because they can see how TC is so remorseful and regretful for doing all that.. then when they go through TIW again it is always much more powerful with a more solid understanding of what happened in the first book.

Oh my I have been lax at keeping up with the boards lately. All these fabulous new members! Welcome to all the newbies! If you're just getting started, I kind of envy you. No matter how up and down you feel when reading Lord Foul's Bane, it will capture you and you'll be helpless. That's what I love about SRD, he makes you feel kinda like "OMG, a dead animal in the road, looks like guts all over the place, don't want to look, but am compelled." Ha ha. Welcome and come on in and look around. These folks in here are awesome and some truly thought-provoking discussions go on in here.
