Never Let Me Go

Post by aliantha »

Saw this today. I loved the book (by Kazuo Ishiguro -- another one of those guys who gets taken seriously when he writes dystopian fiction because he's a "literary author -- but I digress). The movie isn't quite as suspenseful as the book. In the film, the children learn early on what they've been created for (and yes, "created" is the right word), and pretty much all in one go. In the book, the truth comes out in smaller bites. And the movie seems much more concerned with the Kathy-Ruth-Tommy triangle. I don't recall Kathy being quite such a tragic figure of unrequited love in the book, but maybe that's because Kathy's the narrator.

Anyway, I thought it was a good movie. Good performances all 'round. I was somewhat surprised to see Keira Knightley in a supporting role, as I didn't recognize the actress who played Kathy (her name is Carey Mulligan). I suppose she's a British actress and I'm just being clueless, as usual.

Her name doesn't mean anything to me, and a quick check of IMDB reveals she hasn't done anything particularly noteworthy, so I don't think you're being clueless. :)

Anyway, I know nothing about this film but your description has intrigued me.
