Really? The self-checkouts in my local supermarket actively encourage us to bring our own bags.

There's being helpful and then there's insulting the intelligence of your clientele.
Oh yes! There's one particular self-checkout supervisor person who always jumps in with information about where to locate onions/oranges/peppers/whatever in the checkout menu before I've even started looking. To make matters worse, he's been wrong at least twice. On one occasion, I inputted something and he came over, undid it and 'corrected' it...only to realise I'd been right originally and undo his 'correction'. At no point did he apologise for wasting my time and insulting me.

I try to use registers with cashiers.
Why?
Because I'm NOT getting a discount for lowering their operational costs.
f#ck-em.
In this time of unendurably high unemployment rates in my state/area I refuse to use them. Damn things take away jobs from living breathing humans. Screw 'em.

Yeah, the supervisor of the self-checkouts where I shop is a helpful, hot woman....come to think of it, why don't I mess up on my check-out on purpose? :P

CovJr, to be fair, the incident with the clerk who told me I couldn't use reusable bags in the self-checkout lane was quite awhile ago -- and if I remember correctly, there may have been a bit of a language barrier, too....

I'm this one, too! Thanks for saying it so eloquently, HLT.

I've been known to use them. But more often than not you end up getting stuck and waiting for a manager and taking longer instead of less time. So I use a human if possible.

I've also been known to say f#ck-em and leave my jammed up self-serve to rot with my sale half done, and move to a regular line.

This is like annoying phone menus. Now they do them better by hiding any way to talk to a person.

We're stuck with it even if we don't like it.

And I bet they'll be hiding the real cashiers soon, too.

Seriously. But I don't have any choice but to pump my own gas.
Having stayed at lorin's for the last Xar-fest, it is my understanding it is not only the law to have your gas pumped by an employee of the gas station in Jersey, but cheaper as well? Cross the state line, Fist! Win-win, nu?

As far as self-checkouts go, I use them whenever I see them and there is no wait. If there are others using them, I'll wait for a cashier before waiting for someone to "learn" how to use them.
