How do you listen to music in your car?

How do you listen to music on your--you know--stereo? Do you have your computer hooked up to your stereo?

Music was not meant to be heard on computer speakers! Or ear buds! I have a nice pair of headphones that I use when working, but when I want to sit down and relax on my couch and blare some floor shaking tunes, I have to have the CD.

I can't listen to any lossy format. I don't understand how people can tolerate compression. Cymbals that sound like aluminum foil? No thanks. Bass that sounds like a cardboard box? No way.
Well, if they're too compressed, then yea, they don't sound good to me either. I try to never use earbuds either, but that's more because I don't like how *they* sound more than the mp3s. Before I started ripping a few years ago I did a lot of A/B testing to see if I could tell any difference, and anything 128kbps or higher I really can't (I usually rip at 160 or 192 anyway). But I've also played electric guitar for 35 years, so I've lost a bit of my ability to hear higher frequencies. If you still have the ears to notice the difference, then by all means stay with lossless. And if we ever get together, you bring the tunes :)

I decided I didn't want to lug around all those boxes of cds when I haven't touched them in years. I like the convenience of having my entire collection (well, most of it) in one little device the size of a single cassette tape. You can connect it to your stereo or your car with a simple cable and presto! All the tunes you could want. I'm moving cross-country this week (from NC to Utah), and there's no way I could bring all those cds in the car. My wife and I have suitcases, munchies, my guitars, a cat, and all of the cat's stuff (who knew how much stuff a cat would bring? jeez :ct12: ). We don't have room for many cds. I don't like cd wallets, even the ones that hold 256. They take way too long to flip through if you're looking for something.

One of the reasons I'd kept them this long was in case I ever wanted to re-rip all my cds to FLAC or something, but the reality was... I'll never do it. It took too long to go through all of them once.

Haven't gotten rid of my CDs, have about 800 on the wall in two wooden cases, but in the last year I did stop burning CD backups of digital downloaded albums. Decided to just trust the external disk backup drive that I keep a second iTunes folder on.
