Inner Despiser

Covenant's inner despiser is personified as Lord Foul. Now we know that Linden also has an inner despiser personified somewhere in the Land.

Two Immortals, one male, the other female, both evil. Think about it...

Here is what I have thought: On this Lord Foul and SWMNBN..male and female ...again a reflection of and on, opposites..polarized thinking and perceiving..yet both are the One Despair. Despair is Despair . Its how we think and perceive that leads us to Despair. The polarized,,way of perceiving and thinking,,the habitual way we think about what we perceive, perhaps even the way we are taught to think and perceive, what we call " thinking" itself,,leads us away from our Humanity, into Despair.

Here is what I have thought: On this Lord Foul and SWMNBN..male and female ...again a reflection of and on, opposites..polarized thinking and perceiving..yet both are the One Despair. Despair is Despair . Its how we think and perceive that leads us to Despair. The polarized,,way of perceiving and thinking,,the habitual way we think about what we perceive, perhaps even the way we are taught to think and perceive, what we call " thinking" itself,,leads us away from our Humanity, into Despair.

Male and female, with very opposite ways of dealing with their personal torment; Foul externalizes his, SHMNBN internalizes it, literally.

Note that Linden also internalizes, although emotionally.

The authors play of opposites is at every level and at every turn and made excruciatingly sharp in its " pain" delivered to the reader by the author in AATE. He is giving Us the opportunity to " earn" the knowledge and wisdom that will be necessary for comprehending what he has in store for us in TLD...imho.

So despair is the natural conclusion of any deficient form of thinking, like polarization or perspectivity. Deficient for its habitualness, if not for its inherent divisiveness.

One who despairs or despises is not well; is ill. Healing leads to wholeness through integration. To me, what SRD has in store for us in TLD is tending in this direction of thought.

I agree, earthbrah. TC has healed his own mind; Jeremiah is healed. And the Earth is falling apart as the characters are healing. Hmm. Maybe the real victory in TLD will be Linden and Covenant both becoming healthy and whole. Then they won't need the Land....

Yea..There is a tricky part of the whole deal. This idea of being Whole rather than ruled by conflict., the Unification of a divided Man. The original Surrealist saw Man cut in two, divided by the way he perceived existence. At our basic,,we are divided by our perception of the external world,,the environment around us at any one time, the tangible world, and our perception and dealing with our Internal world, the existence between our ears, our sub conscience , memories, et al. These two realities are in conflict with each other for a host of reasons. We suppress one for the other in hierarchy of importance of influence on decision making, resolution of issues etc etc. Over time this conflicted state takes its toll on health. The energy and habitual effort of maintaining a balance seemed to the Surrealists an inefficient , wasteful, self defeating , misdirected expenditure of a life. A Unification of this bifurcated approach to life , the Surrealists believe is any man's salvation, a healthy life.

But what is meant by Unification? Its suggested that rather than any suppression..all is treated or acted upon equally. Made Whole acknowledges both realities equally, understands that all is subjective thus seeks a 3rd reality, above the diametrically opposed, but is the result of interchange, intercourse, mixing, of the opposites that upon analysis ..or the simple habit of exploring,,a 3rd reality evolves that is True for the Individual because it was " created", or discovered by the Individual. Yes, not all discovery is held. Not all ideas are kept. We are free to discard what isn't working. Over Time , that which we keep, becomes Us.,, who I Am. Its the How that is important because of the results, a less conflicted, happier, Whole person, healthier person.

Fascinating it is that TC has been there,,experienced the Infinite. Its interesting that his actions as a mortal, are motivated by Compassion rather than outright sense of right and wrong. He has not entirely left this " sphere of influence" , this Infinity, this changed way of Being. As we can see,,his perspective can't be viewed within the parameters of Good vs Evil, if one wants to experience TC more completely. Thru TC, the author has expanded for us, what it is to be a human being.

Whats the olde saying,,Once hes been to Paris, how do you keep the country boy on the farm?..or ..basketball players talk about being in the Zone...What I'm suggesting is that TC is ,,trying to maintain being in the Zone,,the Zone of Infinity,,the sense of Wholeness,as the Waynhim put it..beginning with the perception that anything is possible,,all possibilities exist without a moral judgment or logical test of being good or evil,,true or false. Linden has removed TC from that Zone. As any basketball payer will tell you,being in the Zone is a preferable place to be. Healthy. And yet, the necessity of bringing to an End to that which conflicts,,Joan, forces Us out of our box of comfort and ease, in a step towards the Infinite. So maintaining ones Health is redefined in terms of " Magnificence and Beauty" rather than in terms of Good or Evil.

After ending Joan,the tsunami comes. What a beautiful metaphor.

But this is precisely what I mean by integration. Thomas Covenant has become, in his way, a symbol for the integral man. His experience with the Arch, the infinite, is not lost to him. It remains transparent through his ineffable contact with it.
