How do you feel today?

Oh well gives me an excuse to just sit at the computer and feel sorry for myself.

Well, my assistant manager got tattled on at the manager's meeting but it wasn't my fault. I went in early to talk to the store manager and as soon as I got there she left for lunch and didn't say anything and then when she got back she called a manager's powwow in her office. The assistant I was ranting about was not there today. First thing on the meeting agenda she looks at me all pissed off and says, "What the hell happened with recovery last night." and I said, "Ok, was going to talk to you privately but now is as good a time as any. I had absolutely no help from the assistant manager unless I walked up to him face to face and ordered him around." Then I went into the details and Zaynab was just sitting there nodding her head in agreement. When I got to the part about hanging up the phone and making him get on a register, my boss had a shocked expression on her face and she said, "For Real?!?" and I said, "Oh, it gets better. Then told her about the very end of the night where he did nothing but talk on his cell phone and recover tech for the last hour while I did cash office, drove recovery and cleaned receiving. She was like, "Ok, guess that covers all my things I had planned to say about recovery and responsibility and believe me, I'm going to have a talk with him tomorrow. That is totally unacceptable." Thing is, no matter what he says, Zaynab was there for about an hour after her shift and she witnessed a bunch of that so I had a managerial witness to back up my story as well as all the associates who were on board.

Erk. Had a ghastly week last week, spent the entire weekend sick, left work early the last two days because I'm still sick, came home to find an inch of water on the floor of my apartment because the ceiling is leaking in multiple places, my landlord is MIA - probably gone for the whole holiday weekend... And I don't think the world is done screwing with me.
I need more buckets, a drink, and a new life, not necessarily in that order.

I'm a bit nervous today. The kid ran full tilt, tripped, and smacked his head into the end table in the bedroom. Almost immediately a big purple goose-egg started and just kept growing bigger and bigger. Obviously, he screamed and screamed. He wouldn't allow us to put ice on it, and it just seemed to be getting bigger and bigger and it looked like blood was welling up under the skin. Carla and I were both flipping out. I ran over and looked it up on the intarweb, and they said emergency room was needed if he seemed disoriented or passed out or vomited. He did none of the above, but it was that "should we go to the emergency room" feeling - feeling bad about not going, and feeling like we'll at least be able to rest easier if we did. Damn it was huge. Of course it happened right at 5 o'clock, so the doc wasn't in and we called for the on-call doc, who basically told us the same thing online was. By the time we got the call from the doctor, he had calmed down, and I even got him to laugh a bit, so we relaxed considerably. We were able to get him to put frozen peas on his head, and that made the swelling go down somewhat.
The normal opening person has been on vacation this week, so I've been filling in for her. Before I left at 2am this morning, I just wanted to go into his room and make sure he was still ok, but didn't. Now I have to wait until 8am to find out if he made it through the night (which I'm sure he did, but the worried parent role is there, dammit).

Sounds like a first-time parent. Heh. My son fell and hit his cheek bone on the corner of a footstool with a wooden border around it. He was about a half-foot from me when it happened. Most terrifying thing I'd seen in my life up to that point. We had just gotten back from somewhere, and the babysitter (a visiting cousin) said she was so glad that happened after we got home. I can imagine how she woulda felt if it happened on her watch!

Kids, man. We've had so many scares like that with my son. But kids are pretty tough.Cagliostro wrote:I'm a bit nervous today. Sometimes the internet can be right, and in this case it is. I'd check his eye sight, see if he can follow your finger side to side, up and down, and in a circle. If you see any abnormal movement in the eyes, I'd definitely take him to the doctor ASAP. If he seems normal, and the swelling is going down you probably have nothing to worry about.
It still wouldn't hurt to get him checked out by a doctor if you can, if only to make you feel better.
My son fell head first on a chair he was chewing on when he was around 18 months. I turned around for one second and bam, he was on the floor. Blood was gushing out of his mouth, he was screaming and I FREAKED out. I took him to the dentist and he was fine. No loose teeth, just some scraped gums from the fall. Head injuries bleed the most, and bruise the easiest.
Take a deep breath and hug your son. You guys are doing great as parents. No worries.

So... turns out that my neighbor's plumbing exploded while they were on vacation, as opposed to a problem with the roof... which I'd figured as the problem continued to get worse after the rain stopped. It took ten hours for my landlord to show up, and the hallway was basically Niagara Falls by that time. Apologies to everyone who was in Vent with me when she showed up screaming and pounding on my door. So now I'm missing another day of work cleaning and salvaging while stuff is still salvageable. On the bright side, IF I can ever afford to move, I have a decent chance of getting my deposit back since any damage my cats might have done to the floor has been... washed away.

Oh Cag, man do I know the feeling.
When Beorn was five he fell from the top of a 6' slide. We were lucky that it was during business hours and took him straight away to our chiropractor, who thoroughly checked him out and manipulated him as needed.
But that twenty minute drive to his office, and the time while he was being checked over will never be forgotten!

Whew! Heidi, Myles and I made it home for the long Thanksgiving weekend. Weren't sure about flying into Redmond with the winter storm going on, but it all worked out. Certainly didn't want to drive it with the all the passes showing icy roads and freezing fog.
So happy to be home. Got almost 4 ft of snow already.
Hope everyone has a Happy Thanksgiving.

And there is no one to dry your tears
I could hold you for a million years
To make you feel my love
For Mom--
Did you ever know that you're my hero,
and everything I would like to be?
I can fly higher than an eagle,
for you are the wind beneath my wings.
Fly...fly high against the sky...
Thank you, thank you, thank God for you

Happy Thanksgiving to All. I for one am thankful for the watch and all the wonderful friends I have made in this community. I love you guys! Sorus, oh dear lord, that sucks. I hope your stuff is ok. Cag, kids get booboos all the time. It's a part of being a kid.

Thanks for your stories and concerns folks.
He's bonked his head a number of times, and it really wasn't anywhere nearly as scary as this. He really walloped himself. But yeah, he's fine. Yesterday when I got home, it just looked kinda purple in the area, but all the swelling had gone. Seriously, if you put about 6 silver dollars together 2X3, that would have been the size of his bump that was swelling out of control.
Actually Desmond had essentially the same thing happen. He tore that little piece of skin on the upper part of the mouth that kinda hangs down between the upper jaw and upper part of the lip. It bled and bled. It was ugly, but we could see nothing all that bad happened. That didn't freak me out nearly as much as this.JazFusion wrote:My son fell head first on a chair he was chewing on when he was around 18 months. Glad the little guy is okay, Cag. As long as we're telling childrearing horror stories, I might as well mention the time I picked up Baby Batty from the sitter. The sitter wouldn't let me see her 'til she explained what had happened.
Basically the sitter's two-year-old had left a toy on the stairs; Sitter, carrying Batty, tripped on the toy on the way down, fell, and dropped the baby. She had a nice goose-egg on her noggin. Sitter, who is a trained pediatric paramedic, kept her awake through naptime to make sure she didn't have a concussion, etc. And Batty survived and is fine, and I'm still friends with the sitter!

Not a parent, but still a horror story:
I was left babysitting my sister once when she was quite young, (she is eight years younger than me).
She was running around, through the corridor, past the ironing board, she tripped on the cord of the iron and it fell on her head...point first
Blood everywhere, we had to clean the carpet with a bucket and sponge after we knew she was all right.
Well, any brain cells she lost weren't especially missed, she is now outperforming me in every area.

Funny, my family never had the bumps and bruises stories when I was growing up. We had the time Jennifer (my sister) "nearly fell into a geyser at Yellowstone Park" story. Or the time Jennifer "nearly choked to death on a marshmellow Peep" story, which is why my mom sends out Peeps to us kids each year at Easter.
