Publishers Weekly online has a small mention (1/16/04) concerning Donaldson and the new Covenant books. To summarize, the article by John Baket states that a deal was struck with Putnam for the quartet of new books with Donaldson's agent Howard Morhaim (Mhoram?) and will publish the first of them, The Runes of Earth, next fall, with a Berkley paperback to follow in 2005. Movie rights have also been optioned, it seems, by producers Marc Gordon and Peter Winther. U.K. rights have been picked up by Orion.
Something there is in beauty.

I received this from the publishers of the British edition.........

Dear Mr Fanning,

We are indeed publishing STEPHEN DONALDSON'S "The Final Chronicles of Thomas
Covenant". The first of the quartet, THE RUNES OF THE EARTH, is currently
scheduled for October, but that date is not set in stone as the author is
currently engaged in rewrites.

Best wishes,

I think you're right about Mhoram/Mhoraim by the way, I'm sure I've read that somewhere.

Excellent news on the whole. I know we've ranted about a Covenant movie a thousand times already, but this is the first time I've considered a movie series starting with the Last Chronicles. I actually think it could work, the corruption of time would enable you to do some interestng things and I imagine that Covenant would be present in some kind of spectre/obi-wan form. With Linden as the central character, supported by the likes of Roger and her son, I think a Last Chronicles movie series would work better than one starting from the beginning.

All this from a cinematic, rather than literary POV, you understand.

i seriously doubt a movie would come any where close to doing a TC book justice. length aside, the complexity of SDR's writing and the depth of the story would not translate well at all to the big screen. i can't see anything but a big disapointment if a movie were ever attempted.

no movies..pleaaase. Especially starting with the Last Chrons, how in the world would that make sense to anyone who haven't read the books?

Some things should just be let be. And Covenant, IMHO, is one of those things. I'm a purist, what can I say?

LOTR was magnificent, a true cinematic accomplishment...but the changes to the story disturbed me. Without the books, there would be no story. I believe that Covenant's story would have to be changed too much to satisfy the masses, and that disturbs me greatly. :(
