Map of the Earth?

Post by Horrim Carabal »

I'm new here, just wondering if there is a fan-created map of Donaldson's Earth anywhere out there. Not just the Land, but the other places that have been visited or mentioned in the Chronicles.

No, but there is an excellent Land map.

I'm a bit disappointed! Somone with an encyclopedic knowledge of the Chrons plus some artistic talent should attempt to create one.

I'm also a huge Erikson fan and it's great to see fan-created world maps to fill in the gaps the "official" maps don't cover in his books.

I'd love to see where Bhrathairealm, Elemesnedene, etc are located relative to the Land.

There's just not enough geographic detail given in the books. I don't see how anybody could make a world map without adding a lot of imaginary details.

Hmmm..well we know the Haruchai and the Insequent come from the west - west of the Land - right? And the Isle of the One Tree (and hence the gaddhi's place and the Elohim) lay to the East...the giants' Home must be beyond them...

Soulbiter is northeast, right?

Videk Amar was referred to as being on "the other side of the world" from the Land, IIRC.

What does that leave?

I wonder if a passable map could be created?

It leaves the imaginary part - 99% of an entire world to map without any details to go on.

It'd be interesting to try to make one... even an incomplete one. We might be able to at least take known geography and guess at the distance between the two.

The problem I think there would be is that some of the land masses (particularly the Isle of the One Tree) move around... I wonder if the Elohim's home moves around as well...

You can't nail down the position of the Soulbiter. It has been found in different places by the Giants.

Hmm...

Well at least we know that
Spoiler
beyond the Westron mountains lies the land of the Insequent. Has there been any hint that an ocean separates this land from the Land?
My recollection is a bit hazy, are the Haruchai from *beyond* the Westrons or is their land *in* the Westrons? Do they live in the mountains themselves?

The gaddhi lives on the other side of the Sunbirth, on another continent.

The King who founded Doriendor Corishev came from beyond the Southrons and the Waste...right? No indication another ocean lay between the two places, so its probably on the same continent as the Land. And when they returned to the Land at the beginning of WGW they came down from the north, from beyond the Northrons, so we know the continent the Land is on continues to the north.

Videk Amar is a separate continent, that's clear.

So we have at least 3 continents that we know of.

There are probably more clues hidden in the text, I'm just using my own recollections, but already things are taking vague shape.

I really think this could be done!

Yes, the Haruchai are a tough race of mountain people who survive the harshest conditions.

Hmmm...if someone knows sailing, and read closely the Giants journey descriptions [especially from One Tree and

I think a pretty fair approximation could be made for several places...former location of one tree before sinking, as well as homes of giants, elohim, and Braithairealm.

might as well get it over with and draw a map of our own Earth. Xanth is nothing more than Florida anyway, so why not? Foul's Creche is probably located in Cape Cod.

The Atlas of The Land by Karen Wynn Fonstad. Unfortunately, I don't have the ISBN number for it--it isn't printed in the hardcover copy I have, but it was first published in 1985 by Ballantine and is listed as "a Del Rey book".

It details the Land with places like Crystal Stonedown and Doriendor Corishev, as well as places like Lifeswallower and Coercri. It also contains depictions of a Giantship and maps of Elemensedene, but it cannot tell us exactly where it is, relative to the Land. If we were to have some sort of Earth-based reference, then I have always envisioned that Brathairrealm as being roughly equivalent to Morocco in relation to Maine (equating The Grieve with Maine).

The Tank is gone and now so am I.

Darn, there is no previewing of Fonstad's Atlas book. Reviews say the maps are in black and white, but obsessively detailed. TOT does not give precise directions of travel. I can easily imagine Donaldson using the real Earth as a guesstimate for their travels, so Morocco it may well be. There is just not enough information to go on. And if those maps are black-and-white, then I would still prefer the beautiful color map of the Land I found online one day. I don't know where it is now, it's not the antgear map.

Yes, the maps are all black/white and incredibly detailed but that doesn't detract from their usefulness. If I recall correctly, Ms. Fonstad sat down with SRD to discuss details to ascertain that the maps were accurate.
