Equilibrium

Post by Fist and Faith »

OK, Syl, I rented it. It's a whole lot of fun!! :D An interesting premise, though I think very unrealistic/unlikely. (I know it's actually a totally different thing, but it brought to mind a short story I read years ago. They thought it was unfair that some people were better than others in various ways, and decided that everyone should be equal. So to stop the smart people from having an unfair advantage over the less smart, they had some sort of earphones in the smart people's ears. Every once in a while, loud noises would go off, breaking the person's train of thought. That way, they couldn't ever use their brilliance. Seeing her husband wince once, a wife asked what it was, and he said that it sounded like a car crash, or something.)

But I digress...

The fights were different, and interesting. I particularly like the very last one, with the two trying to shoot each other. It looked as though they had decent choreography, and don't understand why they felt the need to mess with the cameras the way they did.

The gun kata is also a very neat idea, even if I don't think it would work as well as all that.

All in all, I definitely recommend it.

Yep. The story's not that great (not bad, but nothing groundbreaking), but the action... I just liked the martial arts philosophy behind it. Placing yourself in the area of greatest probable damage, opposing trajectories and all. That, and the fact that the fights play out like real fights should.
Spoiler
None of that 'I can beat the hell out of six thugs but I'm going to get the snot beat out of me by this higher level guy... nah, just slice his face off.
Yeah, imo, the best gun fight ever. Just never seen one that actually looked beautiful.

Another thing I really like about the movie is that you can tell a lot of work went into it (especially if you listen to the commentaries and all), but it received little to no press. Sleeper hit.
"It is not the literal past that rules us, save, possibly, in a biological sense. It is images of the past. Each new historical era mirrors itself in the picture and active mythology of its past or of a past borrowed from other cultures. It tests its sense of identity, of regress or new achievement against that past.”
