Tim Burton. Like, Dislike list!

Really hated:
1. Beetlejuice (film was devoid of anything but stupid sketches)
2. Planet of the Apes (I wanted to love this film so much that I actually fooled myself that I did for a little while)
3. Corpse Bride (could have been a five minute short)
4, Alice in Wonderland

Really loved:
1. Pee Wee's big adventure
2.Batman
3. Edward Scissorhands
4. Batman returns
5. Ed Wood
6. Mars Attacks
7. Sleepy Hollow
8. Big Fish

Meh: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

My good friend Cail will note that not only didn't I like Beetlejuice, but practically every film I did like was post-Beetlejuice!

Seeing as how Alec Baldwin is the single greatest actor of all time, Beetlejuice rocks. It was also something completely different.

PWBA was pretty bad, except for the pet store fire, the biker bar, and Large Marge.

The best thing about Batman was Prince's soundtrack (NOT Danny Elfman's score). And the atmosphere was pretty good too.

Every other film of his I've seen has meandered between "eh", and "ugh". I thought Mars Attacks was horrible. Even Tom Jones couldn't save it.

Batman Returns is the worst one Burton did, IMO. I really liked The Nightmare Before Christmas. I also really liked Sweeney Todd. I haven't seen Corpse Bride or Alice in Wonderland yet.

Alec Baldwin? Christ! You couldn't have made me laugh harder if you had said Ben Afleck was the greatest actor of all time!
My tops are high on the list of anyone's films, not just Burtons:
Sleepy Hollow-- the best re-imagining of a short story into a full fleshed feature length film since Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.
Ed Wood-- Among other things to recommend this picture is Martin Landau's unforgettable and moving portrayal of Bela Lugosi.
Edward Scissorhands-- If you didn't like this movie you probably were not a goth or punk rocker in high school.

I really loved Danny Devito as the Penguin. I actually thought that Batman Returns was better than Batman!
But wouldn't you agree that Batman returns was better than Batman forever, or batman and robin?
Really, it wasn't until Batman begins that anyone did a good batman film, and I actually didn't like the Dark Knight or Heath Ledger's Joker.

Alec Baldwin has been in some bad movies. Alec Baldwin has never been bad in a movie. In most of them he's been outstanding. Likewise, there isn't anyone who's been as consistently funny on SNL, nor in a TV series.

I dislike the man's politics, but you can't name an actor that's consistently as excellent as he is. It's a crime he hasn't received an Oscar, 'cause Lord knows he deserved one for both Malice and Glengarry Glen Ross.

Edited to add- I disliked Edward Scissorhands, and still have a chipped tooth from slam dancing at Hammerjacks at a Ramones show. The Sisters of Mercy are in heavy rotation on my iPod, and I've passed on my love for The Cure to my daughter.

Absolutely not. I'll agree it's not worse than B & R, but I liked Forever more. It's just my opinion, you know.

I agree that Alec Baldwin is an amazing actor. Watch 30 Rock; he's awesome.

The Cure, well, if the lead singer could keep his pitch, I'd have loved them. As it is, I merely like them, and yes, I realize the singer's voice really gives the band a lot of its' identity.

This is especially ironic given the fact that Edward is neither goth nor punk.

Tim Burton's a great storyteller... when he decides to actually tell a story. A Nightmare Before Christmas, Beetle Juice, Scissorhands, and Big Fish were original, entertaining, and, I'd say, personal. I suppose I liked the first Batman, but it was the first movie I ever saw in the theatre by myself and the first VHS tape I ever owned (ok, and Nicholson was awesome, even if it does mean putting up with Basinger). I haven't watched it or had a remote desire to watch it in about a decade. I wanted to like Ed Wood and Mars Attacks, but I couldn't finish either of them. The rest, and I've seen all of his movies, strangely (or not so, since the wife is a fan), are completely forgettable.

My biggest problem with Burton as a director is that he seems to let substance suffer in the pursuit of style. Worse, he comes across as though he's really trying hard to be quirky.

David Fincher did an amazing job of balancing both in Seven, The Game, and Fight Club.

It also doesn't help that Burton has tied a great deal of his fortunes to Johnny Depp, who I absolutely loathe as an actor.

I haven't seen Edward Scissorhands in about 20 years... but I still remember it as being an amazing film. I've really gotta go back and watch it again.

And Big Fish is one of my favorites of all time.

Batman was great for its time, but has been entirely eclipsed by the Nolan films... now, the Burton one just seems cartoonish.

Sleepy Hollow was enjoyable though lacking substance.

Alice in Wonderland was horrible; both convoluted and meaninglessly shallow. Though I have friends who were... experimenting with certain substances when we watched it. Watching my friends trip was more fun than watching the movie :)

The Nightmare Before Christmas was quirky, but didn't do anything for me.

I haven't seen the others.

Let me explain why I did not like Beetlejuice:
It seemed like an empty suit.
There was no plot.
There was no reason to watch it other than to watch all the quirky little skits.
Everyone in the movie was under-utilized.

Beetlejuice - Love it, classic. Best Michael Keaton performance of all time.

Planet of the Apes - Never saw it, don't particularly want to.

Corpse Bride - Haven't seen it. Looks "meh".

Alice in Wonderland - Like it. Interesting take.

Pee Wee's Big Adventure - Love it, classic.

Edward Scissorhands - Not bad. Overrated. Said "meh" when it was in theaters but saw it years later.

Batman - Good. Not great.

Batman Returns - Good. Not great.

Ed Wood - Liked it. Interesting.

Nightmare Before Christmas - Not bad. Overrated.

Mars Attacks - Bad.

Sleepy Hollow - Haven't seen it. Meh.

Big Fish - Not bad. Interesting.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory - Loved it. Much better than the Wilder one.

Sweeney Todd - Gory. Not bad.
