Could someone explain......
Real quick question re the threads at the start of this forum ( and perhaps the rest - I can't remember). Some titles are 'Sticky' - what is this? And some (the ones underneath the sticky ones) have a black right pointing arrowhead next to them. What does this signify? Probably both staringly obvious answers but could someone explain....
Also some of the left hand side 'icons' are flashing and some are not - What is this?
Thanks Guys.

They are sticky because they do not move, no matter how long it's been since they've been responded to. Somebody decided these threads were important, and wanted people to find them without searching through pages and pages of other threads. If you click on the black arrow, it takes you to the most recent post in that thread. The flashiness means that it is a popular thread. For more explanations of the symbols, scroll to the bottom of the forum, or ask.

Sticky threads are ones we don't want to lose track of because they're important -well that's the theorypeter wrote:Real quick question re the threads at the start of this forum ( and perhaps the rest - I can't remember). The black right pointing arrow will take you to the last post you viewed in that thread.
If you see an orange image then it means there's a new post since your last visit.
If the image is shaing its ass then it means it's a popular thread

That makes three of us. And it took me about ten years here to figure out how to copy the location of a specific post (somebody had to tell me, I forget who).Stonemaybe wrote:me neither!CovenantJr wrote:All these years here and I didn't know that.Auleliel wrote:If you click on the black arrow, it takes you to the most recent post in that thread.
Should I move this into the Q&A forum?

Sounds like a good idea.
I knew most of this...only because I was tutored by the one known by some as the concierge of the Watch. Even so, I do not follow the orange dot tree, preferring the View Posts Since Your Last Visit linky.

...and then there is always the exception to the rule where either the orange dot tree or the arrow to the oldest unread post is being finicky, and it brings you to the oldest post you read on your last visit to the thread. Causing you to have to scroll to find the first unread post.
Still, I prefer it to using the "view posts since last visit" link, as spoiler tags tend to be revealed when I click on that.

I didn't know it either until I tried it.aliantha wrote:That makes three of us. OK - How about this one.
When I post a reply on a thread by clicking the 'Quote' button I get the post that I want to comment on in the box and I delete the bits I want to until the relevant part I am comenting on is all that is left. Some people however, I note, are able to quote from more than one previous post in the same ....erm.....post (if you get my drift). eg they may at this point
have a boxed quote from Vain
and yet a little later
have a boxed quote from Aulelial.
Question; How do they do that!

Underneath the post box (heh. puns.), there is a window with previous posts of the thread. You can copy and paste any section of any post into your own post and then simply put it into quote brackets. For example, you were the last poster, and I quoted you above, and now I can scroll down a little further to find Krazy Kat's post...Peter wrote:OK - How about this one.

Voila! I'm not sure, but I think it's a little joke at the expense of the high volume posters. As in, you have over a thousand posts, lots of them must be spam. Is it the highest rank in the automatic rankings?Krazy Kat wrote:Could anyone explain what 'the gap into spam' means?
As my post count has reached 1000, the avatar description which was previously 'Haruchai', has now changed!
Yay! I'm helping!

All the auto rankings are good until you reach "The Gap into Spam"! I can't help with the noisy snow-crunching sound as I rarely see snow, but I still would like to know about the new shoe phenomenon - turning into a noisy squeek the next day
And it happens so quickly!

Interesting thing I've seen on more up to date forum software is the addition of quote buttons on the topic preview that will insert the post in question into the text box for you.Cambo wrote:Underneath the post box (heh. puns.), there is a window with previous posts of the thread. I bet the new versions wash dishes for you, too. And ask you what you want on your pizza. And freshen up your drink on request. But alas, we shall never have them...Murrin wrote:Interesting thing I've seen on more up to date forum software is the addition of quote buttons on the topic preview that will insert the post in question into the text box for you.Cambo wrote:Underneath the post box (heh. puns.), there is a window with previous posts of the thread. Anyway, the answer to your original question, peter, is that the only way to do it is manually. The software will do the first quote for you manually; you have to create second and subsequent quotes in the same post yourself.
