Tim Burton. Like, Dislike list!

Just watched Big Fish. Really, really good movie.

My biggest problem with Burton as a director is that he seems to let substance suffer in the pursuit of style. Worse, he comes across as though he's really trying hard to be quirky.

Exactly. That's Tim Burton in a nutshell. His work is a caricature of itself.

I remember liking Big Fish. But strangely, I don't remember much about the movie itself. That can't be good.

Nightmare: about halfway through the "This is Halloween" song, I was terrified that the rest of the movie was going to be this way. Unfortunately, I was halfway right. You couldn't pay me to sit through that again.

Sleepy Hollow was a far better film than anyone will give it credit for.

I agree. I think it's Burton's best. His style worked perfectly for the subject matter, without falling into the trap mentioned by Cail.

It also doesn't help that Burton has tied a great deal of his fortunes to Johnny Depp, who I absolutely loathe as an actor.

Again, I couldn't agree more. I loathe Depp. He's the actor equivelant of Burton, a perfect mirror of Burton's flaws: "...he seems to let substance suffer in the pursuit of style. Worse, he comes across as though he's really trying hard to be quirky." That's Depp's entire bag of tricks.

Batman: one other point, let's not forget how surprised everyone was to see Michael Keaton, thought to be a zany comic actor, surpass himself as a dark twisted vigilante in a serious role!

Yeah, now that you mention it, I do remember being stunned by that. Also, I liked that shot of the bat plane against the moon as it climbed and then briefly hung there perfectly outlined before it fell gracefully toward the earth. Cheesy, yes. But it worked for me.

Mr Freeze has the worst onslaught of cheesy one-liner puns in the history of bad guys.

Nipples on the batsuit make about as much sense as nipples on a guy. If God can't be blamed, then how can Schumacher?

I'd probably say Ed Wood is his best movie, although I'd probably say Edward Scissorhands was my favorite of his movies.

Ed Wood was especially well done, and the scene where he meets Orson Welles was the highlight for me. A brilliant scene showing the man who made "The Worst Movie Ever Made" (Plan 9 From Outer Space) meeting the man who made "The Best Movie Ever Made" (Citizen Kane) and illustrating how they both had the same drive to make movies.

Edward Scissorhands just hit the right notes for me personally, even though the ending falls pretty flat, and arguably had the wrong ending (he probably should have been destroyed by the townspeople, though I didn't want him to be). Then again, I think Pee Wee's Big Adventure might be overtaking the ES spot as it is much more watchable these days, as I don't like Winona Ryder like I still did at the time I originally watched this movie.

I forgot say that Depp's character in Sleepy Hollow is the least annoying Depp character I've ever seen. Just as my dislike for Depp contributes to and mirrors my dislike for Burton, the opposite alignment seems to be happening in this case. I'm not sure if a better Depp character makes SH a better movie, or if a better movie makes for a better Depp character ... it's probably both.

Yeah, I cannot stand Burton or Depp. Depp is hideously over-rated, and it's rather embarrassing how many Burton movies he is in. Burton is essentially faux-goth style without any cleverness, and he's parodied so much he's got no artistic integrity.

Oh, Scissorhands is overrated too, and utter rubbish.

I thought Depp did a good job in Nick of Time and Secret Garden, but he was playing a normal guy in both films.

Unquestionably, like "sleepy hollow" the source material was more literate... but I like the movie more! More fun! Yeah! Fun! Yeah! (that's what I said) FUN! (yeah....)
