Interesting little exchange this, to me, as I am one of the very offending cashiers you refer to 8 hours a day 5 days a week.
Cashiers form one of the easier groups in society to heap opprobium on by virtue of their easy availability and percieved low status in western society. Much of this is in fact refered 'angst' that would otherwise build up and be released in possibly more destructive ways - I mean is it really such a big deal to have to 'order and flatten' your own notes for carrige in your walllet. (Incidentally most of the cashiers I know are lucky to have any surplus notes left in their wallets after 40 hours on $7 an hour - and for this you want pampering like a poodle on an old lady's lap. Well in my book minnimum wage equates to minnimun service and it is 'for the birds' to expect otherwise.)
In addition some days I may serve 30, 40, 50 people an hour for hours on end. If I wate time de-crumpling and ordering the notes as suggested then in doing so I am screwing the people at the back of an already long queue, so if you have to sort your own notes perhaps take some consolation from being served 5 minutes quicker. Which at the end of the day pisses you off more - sorting your own notes or waiting in a long queue for a sales assistant who seems to be going deliberatelt slow by, yes - sorting out his/her till between every customer. :mgun:
Lastly the point about the notes we are given is the clincher. 99% of people are so bone idle and disorganized in this day and age that the use of a wallet is a rareity. Most notes come in looking as though they have spent the last 6 months in a uni-cyclists jock-strap and if you think I'm going to spend my allready limited time sorting and ironing them for you for $7 per hour you can whistle! :x

( Sorry guy's - that was just such good fun I had to give myself full reign. Does anyone remember by the way the Kevin Smith film 'Clerks'. Set in a 7-11 store about two waster store clerks who spend all day abusing customers and slacking, the the advertising poster featured the immortal tag line 'Clerks - because we serve you doesn't mean we like you.)

Nice point Peter. And I'm fighting against becoming too anal, and not "sweating the small stuff." Hell, I used to never care about what way around the damn toilet paper roll went until a conversation very similar to this. STOP MAKING ME CARE ABOUT STUFF THAT DOESN'T MATTER!!!!

When I had to run a till as part of my job (admittedly, it's been many a year), we had to count our own drawer at the beginning and end of the shift, and balance it against the register tape. Oh, and this counting time was not part of the clocked shift...so those who were not good with numbers or just slow really got a bad deal.

Yes, we had to have all the bills facing the same way in the drawer. Of course!

What frosts me now is that most people working cashier jobs cannot make change at all. Heaven forbid you should produce a coin or two to simplify the change when they have seen the bills in your hand and assumed that your are only paying with colored paper and not little pieces of metal as well. Many's the time I have (for instance) paid $20.10 for a charge of 19.85...and had the clerk confidently try to give me 5 cents change. Then they act so put-upon when you suggest that what they have done is perhaps not entirely correct.
Heh, or they count out the 15 cents change and then add a dime to it, so you end up with 2 dimes and nickel, instead of the Quarter you were aiming for. Though most registers these days tell you how much change to give back, so this should no longer be a problem

I was a cashier at a McDonalds and a Tim Hortons, and like Peter said, what's important is speed. Get em in then get em out. Any thing that lengthened that time would piss you off because you'd get an earful from a manager that thought the drive-thru clock was god and bitching about how you were five seconds over. Not to mention the damn thing would beep once you passed the target time.

The first time someone gave me change like you did, Icarus, I was confused... but I learned to prefer it. Much simpler and quicker... so long as the manager was able to stay on top of the game and keep you supplied with change

Another thing: I use to derive mathematical functions for fun. As a result, when some smug bastard would come through and qouth, "What, you can't do the math in your head?" I always wanted to give him back his money and tell that fat loser to go choke on a-

Sigh.... and I was the calmest one (seriously, when a consumer was particularly bad and the GM didn't want to deal with them, I was called upon)

No offense intended Peter, I wasn't aiming my criticism directly at Fast Food or Convenience store cashiers, that are always under the gun and paid low, it's a regular habit, regardless how busy the cashier is or how well they get paid, it's like a lost art. Truth be told, IMHO, if you're in the habit of keeping the bills in the same direction, it actually doesn't take any measurable extra time, and the time you save giving back change makes up for any miniscule loss.

 None taken Sinadur, none taken. Truth be known, most of my customers, it's all they can do to stagger up to the till with their white cider and then out the door to the nearest park bench. Not much call for pressed notes there I think.

:x Daylight Savings Time! South Korea doesn't do DST, so now I have to rethink all my calculations about what time it is at home! I had just gotten to the point where the calculations were almost instantaneous, but now I have to use new numbers and I'm second-guessing myself constantly. Also, I have to wake up earlier if I want to talk to my family on Skype.
:x whoever decided that DST was a good idea!

It was the government. DST stands for Diabolically Sinister Tampering; they have a whole department dedicated to annoying us in these ways.

It's an anachronism that is no longer needed or wanted. For some reason beyond me governments won't consighn it to the dustbin of history. Look for who benefits (and there will be somebody) and you will find the reason why we are still lumbered with it. (I loose an hours sleep in a few weekends time because of it and have to get up at 5am instead of 6am to go to work having finished at 9pm the previous night - Thanks Government!).

Wrong, and wrong. You know, there are sources of information at your fingertips. Why, if you took some of the time you spent here posting crap, and dedicated it to learning something, you might one day know something.
