The Last Exorcism
I'm not a fan of this series, but this movie was surprisingly good. It's done documentary style, focusing on a preacher who is skeptical of the whole exorcism phenomenon. He goes to a small rural home at the request of the father who's daughter has apparently been killing the livestock, and the preacher intends to help them despite not believing demons actually possess people. But things are clearly not right at this home, though what exactly is wrong isn't cleared up until the very end. Don't read any spoilers, and go rent this movie now!

Just once, I'd like to see an exorcism movie where the token doubting Thomas is proven right in the end, and that ghost & demons et al don't exist.
I'll avoid this one, as the whole "skeptic who must be won over" thing is overly tired for me.

Other than the obvious Doubting Thomas who has brought us all together on this site, what other examples made you tired of this concept? I'd be interested in seeing those movies.
This isn't a token doubting Thomas. He is the main character. The producers of this movie tried to play fair with both faith and skepticism. I think they did a good job. If the idea really has become a cliche, as you imply, then there is still something to be said for presentation. In that regard, this movie did everything right. The understated nature of the film, focusing on the characters instead of spinning heads and vomit, really impressed me. The closest thing I can think of is Blair Witch Project, except this was actually interesting from a psychological perspective, and it was genuinely disturbing (unlike someone just shaking the tent or piling up sticks and rocks).

Just about every ghost / exorcism / supernatural movie ever made has, as one of the main characters, the skeptic who doesn't believe any of it is real and must be convinced that something is actually happening.Zarathustra wrote:Other than the obvious Doubting Thomas who has brought us all together on this site, what other examples made you tired of this concept? Yea, this one was pretty good. Seen this angle before, but, this one was really well done.
