It doesn't actually mention that Frodo is in the movie. Perhaps Mr. Wood will be portraying an older version of Bilbo or a relative or some such thing. I haven't read the book in two dozen years so I recall too little of the specifics of the characters involved to speculate with much confidence.

If I recall correctly, Legolas was Thranduil's nephew, and as part of the wood elven king's retinue would have been in the hall when the dwarfs were imprisoned and Bilbo enabled them to escape by barrel.

...I think.

AFAIK, the movies will be bookended by Frodo reading the Red Book of Westmarch, ie, Bilbo's journal. His role will be nothing more than a narrator.

The second movie I believe fills in some gaps between the Hobbit and LoTR and fleshes out the Necromancer in Mirkwood scenario. I would assume the end of the Hobbit, Bilbo at home and the start of the LoTR with Frodo having moved in with Bilbo is also a gap that may well be filled out.

I don't doubt that Rigel's explaination is also highly likely and also serves to build one expanded tale rather than two smaller series.

From what I've read, it looks like both movies are the story of the Hobbit, but fleshed out from what was in the books (such as the Necromancer in Mirkwood scenario mentioned above). I've heard that Radagast the Brown is in it, and played by a former Doctor Who (Sylvester McCoy).

There is a good feature on The One Ring website now called "The Hobbit in 5" that comes out every Friday to update on all of the recent news of the week. And they have them archived, so you can catch up. I've missed the last three weeks, but I hope to get caught up this week. Good to hear that the filming hasn't been delayed again.

10 minute video from the sets.

I haven't seen it yet, but I suspect it will make me very happy.

Ok, I've watched it now, and I can't wait for more. Very cool seeing PJ walking around the different sets, and the Maori blessing was very cool.

This may be old news, I haven't been following this thread too closely, but I read today that Aidan Turner , an Irish actor, will be in the film. According to Wiki, he'll play Kili.

Hmmm... hopefully there's a nice skimpy elf costume for her to wear. Or maybe a see-through filmy gown...

I like that it felt more like a Gregorian chant.

Now if I could just figure out who Gandalf is fighting.

I like that the Troll scene looks to be updated somewhat. I heard the same sounds that Trolls make in LOTR, so hopefully this means they don't argue about Burrahobbits and call each other names like "Bill."

I'd been reading this Dwarven song for decades, my mind filling in the melody for me, and it's kind of spooky hearing how close they got it to my own personal rendition.

OK, I have to admit I wasn't completely sold on the idea of this movie- after all, the '77 cartoon is one of my favorite childhood movie- but after seeing the trailer, it's fair to say that I'm excited.

I also have love for the Rankin/Bass version, so the version of the "Far O'er the Misty Mountains" song at first struck me as wrong in the trailer as it doesn't have the same melody, but I really like it.

I like the development of the Dwarven song with the orchestra as a musical theme for the movie itself, which you can hear as the trailer progresses. Nice touch, carrying that forward thematically into the journey. Very much like the work Shore did for LOTR.

Also, the Hobbit or Shire theme has an interesting twist.

I like the CGI work for the "silly" parts like the Dwarves cleaning up after the dinner, plates spinning and rolling, etc. I also like how they've captured a younger/sillier/Hobbitier tone in general, without coming off as ridiculous, and then blending that with a more mature tone of the LOTR.
