X-Men: First Class
Saw this last night, and really enjoyed it. My only complaint was the use of minor characters from the X-Men universe. I really missed not seeing a young Cyclops or Jean Grey.

Rotten Tomatoes has it at 87%, which is very good. Having read X-Men since Giant Size 1, I think I can live without Cyclops & Phoenix hogging the spotlight. Reading the cast list, I'm surprised to see there's a Mrs. Xavier character. I don't think Charles was ever married in the comics, though he's been in a relationship with the Shi'ar empress Lilandra since the '70's.

That's irrelevant to my earlier post, as it occurred prior to X-men #1. Also, it couldn't have been an elationship, and there were no internets back then.sgt.null wrote:Charles had at least one other elationship.

I'm a big fan of Mad Men, so I must say my main reason to go was January Jones:

The film didn't disappoint there. Oh...the rest. Well, uh, yes! Fantastic return to X-men form! Good job.
I mean..... You want to watch that film?!

You want to watch the Green Lantern film after seeing its trailer?sgt.null wrote:i am hoping to see a Green lantern / X-Men double header.

Funny, that's how I feel about all the comic book films being released this yearLord Foul wrote: You want to watch the Green Lantern film after seeing its trailer?I mean..... You want to watch that film?!

That's strange. The one year where you have two good ones out at the same time. You need to check the reviews of both Thor and this film. I'd say they definitely go against the grain of what you're expecting.Rigel wrote:Funny, that's how I feel about all the comic book films being released this yearLord Foul wrote: You want to watch the Green Lantern film after seeing its trailer?I mean..... Foul, which trailer did you see for GL? just the first one? The first one underwhelmed everyone and had them groaning (Movie wasn't far enough along in Post-op and therefore, nto much footage to choose from). Since then, there's been a couple/few more trailers and people are now much more excited about it.Lord Foul wrote:That's strange. The one year where you have two good ones out at the same time. I don't go to theaters hardly ever, but, GL and X-MEN:FC are definitely movies I was see.

Yup, a perfectly good reason to see it, not only is he pretty to look at, he's a good actor, he's done insane in Horror with the Amityville Horror remake, he had a critically aclaimed Drama part recently, where I beleive he was the only performer in a clsoed environment, and he's got comedies stacked up like crazy in his history.Murrin wrote:It's Ryan Reynolds.

Buried. Yeah, it was pretty good. I was kind of surprised, since I decided to watch the movie after the director made an ass out of himself over it (demanded he be nominated for an Academy Award or something like that). Not for the claustrophobic or those who require a lot of visuals (or any), but compelling. Also strangely moving as Captain Excellent in Paper Man.sindatur wrote: ...he had a critically acclaimed Drama part recently, where I believe he was the only performer in a closed environment...
"It is not the literal past that rules us, save, possibly, in a biological sense. It is images of the past. Each new historical era mirrors itself in the picture and active mythology of its past or of a past borrowed from other cultures. It tests its sense of identity, of regress or new achievement against that past.”

I've seen reviews for both of them. The ones for XM:FC are oddly positive, the ones for Thor seem to confirm that I won't like it. I attribute the positive reviews to fanboism, but I'll give this a shot on video.Lord Foul wrote:That's strange. The one year where you have two good ones out at the same time. Unless you can articulate why you like it, beyond the visuals & the inclusion of popular characters?

Rigel -- not sure the fanboys really like XMFC. It isn't extremely faithful to the Xmen canon, based on my recollection.
I found it to be entertaining, though I freely admit I have a low threshold of entertainment for comic book movies.
The characters are written well. January Jones (Emma Frost) can't act a whit, but she sure is pretty, and I decided that her acting ultimately didn't matter.
The other characters made up for it. You get Magneto's backstory, and I throughly enjoyed every scene he was in. You see Mystique's psychological make-up in the making. I found the portrayal of Xavier to be engaging, though the movie never really focused on him as a developing character, in my opinion. You see how Beast is made, but only as a counterpoint to Mystique. The main villain of the movie, Sebastian Shaw, is okay, I suppose, but I wasn't sold on the casting choice.
The themes remain at a comic book level, which some might find frustrating (not me). The effects are good. It is over 2hrs long, but I ultimately didn't mind that.
