I really enjoyed this film-Melissa Leo and Christian Bale both earned their Oscars in this one. Based on a true story with a heart-wrenching subplot. I'm very surprised no one's mentioned this...

i thought we had discussed it?

julie and i loved it. i lived in Lowell, Mass back in the summer of 89. i recognized parts of the city that they filmed in.

Bale was his usual excellent self. and Leo proved again what a great actress she is. well deserved oscars indeed.

I thought so too, couldn't find the discussion 10+ pages in. We may have talked about it in an Oscars thread.

what harm in one more thread? :)

i will tell that Lowell was very blue colar - at least the part i lived in and near. in my building i was the only non-Portuguese native. even the job i had at the time i was in that minority. (i worked at a nursing home - house cleaning)

the neighborhoods surrounding were what you see in the film. i recognized some of the locales - either it didn't change that much (likely) or they did a hell of a job in post production.

We saw an interview - I think with 60 minutes - in which Mark Walberg walked the reporter through Lowell and you could hear people yelling at Mark that he owed them money. He'd laugh and say "No, that's my brother". He really has grown up.

really like wahlburg. the fact that he financed the movie and made sure the real people got credit is really nice.
