Transformers 3

Post by finn »

I saw the trailer to this when I went to see Thor and it looked amazing: it didn't disappoint.

The first 10-15 minutes were pretty breathtaking, with the whole stark clarity of space and the moon's surface launched in every direction by the 3D, which for most of the movie is used reasonably well, but at the start is wide-eyed "wow" territory.

The new love interest is introduced in a way which I suppose shapes her role and certainly rolls her shape, as the camera follows her legs up stairs and then follows the stairs up her legs, to reveal a far too short shirt and a pert representation of what I'm sure the recruiter and caster describes as acting ability; a definition accepted no doubt by all, once they had appraised her (ahem) assets.

The overall movie was aimed at teens, but is a fast paced action thriller, with the superb effects of the Transformers themselves keeping the pulse up throughout the film. The plot is not shakespearean, but then many good action flicks are short on plot and characterisations; this is short but not necessarily bad.
Spoiler
The Transformer found on the moon is voiced by none other than Leonard Nimoy and its hard not to see past a representation of Spock made of car and truck parts, despite him being the bad guy. Its a bit irreverant to both this movie and to Trek when he starts pulling out Spock lines; he can hardly compain of stereotyping when he does this stuff!
Overall a good ride, things move fast, blow up and get smashed. Humans manage to roll through blades and shrapnel with consumate ease, like John McLean through multiple machine gun bursts. Its not so very different!
"Winston, if you were my husband I'd give you poison" ................ "Madam, if you were my wife I would drink it!"

"Terrorism is war by the poor, and war is terrorism by the rich"

"A fine is a tax for doing wrong. A tax is a fine for doing well."

"The opposite of pro-life isn't pro-death. Y'know?"

"What if the Hokey Cokey really is what its all about?"

Side note Mr. Nemoy is married to Bay's cousin and was the voice of Galvatron in the original 80's movie. It's probably a great movie to behold, but I'm passing on it. Bay's interpretation of the Transformers is not that much fun for me especially after ROTF. But that's me. Go enjoy and make up your own mind.

I was going to post a long review of Transformers 3, but couldn't be bothered wasting words on a movie I thought was passable. I love Transformers - as a kid, and really enjoyed the first movie. But Bay either lost the ability to make a movie that cares about the material or just wanted to focus on action. The main problem with the movie is that he doesn't focus on what he needs to - too much Sam and humans and not enough on the robots. Further, the Decepticons are made to look ineffective. Could someone tell me what Shockwave is supposed to do in the movie other than look menacing? He harms no Autobot, and his drilling machine is more of a threat. Megatron looks great, but stands around doing nothing and his death is rather poignant because he actually attempts to bargain peace with Prime. Starscream is as great as ever, and he really shines in the movie, and his death is quite tragic. Once again, Optimus is too powerful, and one wonders the Autobots lost the war.

2 stars.
