Ye gods, I need a vacation. Godsawful week, and only one day off next week. (And yet, they still managed to cut my hours.)

Borderlands? Gawd, Jenn - I think we're neighbors now. 8O

Sorry, Sorus.

Oh yeah, Linna -- didn't mean to skip over you and your good day, hidden in amongst the general whingeing. ;) Glad you and your in-laws get along so well, and that y'all had a good visit. :)

Bleh... I just need a couple of days to clean this place so I can paint and it'll feel like MINE because everything is kinda weird and surreal right now - probably because I'm so tired. No rest for the wicked. I did manage to clean all the shelves except the top one that I couldn't reach - I lost all my furniture and don't even have anything to stand on. But anyway, Baby got up there last night and tracked smudgy ikkle pawprints EVERYWHERE, and knowing it's that gross up there is driving me crazier. :P

Where are you living Sorus? I am literally two blocks from Borderlands, in fact you have been here before cuz I'm couch surfing with BGB. If you need any neighborhood recs I got you covered.

Yeah, I can't remember exactly where BGB is, but I'm about 4-5 blocks away from Borderlands.

Yup. There should be a jack on the side of your laptop that looks like it takes an extra-large phone cord plug. That's your ethernet jack. You'll need a cat-5 cord to connect that jack to whatever setup she's got -- DSL modem or cable modem.

If she's using dial-up, then it's even easier -- all you need is a regular phone cord. Altho nobody will be able to use the phone while you're online. And if somebody happens to call when you're online, you might get knocked off. (Ah, the joys of dial-up! )

And if none of this works, then you'll have to ask another Watcher with more technical knowledge than I've got.

sarge, the cat-5 cord usually looks like a thick yellow cord with two larger phone plugs, one at either end. I think they do come in other colors, though. A lot of computers used to come with one, so you may have one somewhere.

Image

One end plugs into that larger jack on your laptop, the other directly in to the modem. As ali said, it will work with either DSL or cable/ethernet modems.

If she does have dial-up, there should be a code using an asterisk to block incoming calls when you're online. But it has been so long since I used dial-up, I don't recall it anymore. *72, maybe?

And be forewarned that dial-up is slow. i would assume very little image uploading would happen if you wind up on dial-up.

Your modem at home probably has one between the modem and the wall plug, Sarge. You could just take that with you, since both of you will be gone on the trip. I think cat-5 cords are kind of expensive, but I could be wrong...

EDIT to say, oh duh, your m-i-l must already have a cat-5 cord going into *her* computer from the modem. Just unplug it from hers and plug it into yours. Unless y'all are planning to be online at the same time -- then you'll need a separate cord.

I'm a little cranky today. It was hot this weekend while Magickmaker and I were gallivanting around -- and not NM dry heat but Mid-Atlantic sticky heat. We were out in it for several hours both days. And then Saturday night, I started to come down with a cold, for which I took Nyquil last night. So I'm kind of groggy today too. And all that's on my plate here at work today is the bills, which are my least favorite part of my job. I was able to move most of 'em off my desk last week, but the one still sitting here has 285 pages of time entries that I need to go through. I reviewed 67 pages Friday, so hey, just about 220 pages to go. Bleah.

I'm sad. Bloodguard Bob's dog passed away last night. We took them out for a great beach day complete with sausages and lots of lounging in the sand and she had a seizure in the night and died. She was an elderly dog but it was very heartwrenching. Bloodguard Bob is a wreck.

So sorry, Jenn. At least her last day was a good one. Hugs for you, Moose, and BGB.

Ayup Jenn...

Sad too for Bloodguard Bobs Dog. It's a shame when dear Pets die. I lost two Cats (I have 8 now) in three months this year. Devastating it is...

But in response to the Thread title, my feeling at this moment is full and replete and Happy for once at Home. A potentially trying day at work (running a Quarry Pulverising plant) came off really well for the first full Day after a LOAD of Problems over the last few months, and I've just finished dinner which was Chicken Tikka Masala Curry (An English favourite) left over from Saturday, with lovely fresh Golden savoury rice washed down with a bottle of Pear Cider and two glasses of Pimms... And I may just go score a Beer in a moment... :D

Yeah! it's almost like some kinda omnipresent negativeness.

It should have been a good weekend here, but was an anticlimax.
It was fun to spent an afternoon playing golf. Even the rain showers were a blessing, cooling off the stifling heat for a spell.
But when the gang returned home we found that someone had swiped the card for the digi-box - no movie channel now.

I shouldn't let myself get bored. I bought some tools and a few more components from Maplins on Saturday. So, lots to be getting on with.

sorry to hear that Jenn. I get so sad when anyone's pet dies.

As for me, I am a wet, sodden (redundant?) sweaty mess. 97 and HUMID! I left work early and came home. Wet down helldog and jumped in the pool. When are they going to make waterproof laptops?

BGB came home early from work and we buried Millie in the back yard and it was so very sad. I am making him comfort food for dinner. My specialty spaghetti and I already have his favorite banana pudding with nilla wafers and whipped cream chilling in the fridge. He's taking a nap and Heatherly is coming over to mourn with us.
