can they improve upon the Kurt Russell version?

The prequel focuses on the Norwegian crew that first discovered the alien three days prior to the dog arriving at Outpost 31. The film was shot in Toronto and is will be released on October 14, 2011

I've read the Script and it's not bad. I only wish that Universal had had some balls and kept it entirely a Norwegian cast. They interject Americas into the first camp and it seems out of place with what Carpenter had implied in his movie.

Here's a link to the purported leaked script if you want to be spoiled.
www.megaupload.com/?d=B0YOFW4C

It appears they made some changes to names since it's leak. That would imply they most likely took the extended October date to add and re-shoot for whatever else they had to change.

Also here's a leaked version of the Thing Trailer held at the NYCC www.youtube.com/watch?v=JXUS3C697lw

From it it appears that elements from the script are correct making me suspect it's a rough draft and that the finished product will completely different with the skeletal themes in place.

I'm somewhat interested in this movie and I am completely ready to give it a chance. I think Universal is wary and wants to play it safe. I can't blame them after how the first one was treated.

I haven't read the script, and I've purposely stayed away from as much press about it as I could. I did read an interview with the director (or maybe the producer) a few months back, and all he talked about was shat a big fan of the original he was, and how he was going to do it justice.

I dunno. Doing the whole thing in Norwegian would have been awesome. I really hope they do the effects practically rather than digitally. Stan Winston's dead, and Rob Bottin's name isn't attached to the new film. That's bad. But I dunno.....I'll probably see it regardless.

Not everyone dies the way you think.

Here's the official Trailer.

Didn't the original open with the Swedes in a helicopter chasing the dog? That would imply that some of them survived.

In winter 1982, an American Antarctic research station is alerted by gunfire and explosions. An Alaskan Malamute is trying to evade a Norwegian helicopter with an on-board sniper frantically trying to kill it. The helicopter lands and the pilot attempts to volley a thermite charge, but accidentally drops the grenade and dies in the subsequent explosion; unable to communicate with the team in English, the surviving sniper fires at the dog, grazing George Bennings (Peter Maloney), one of the researchers. The sniper is shot and killed by Garry (Donald Moffat), the station commander. Not knowing what to make of the incident, the station crew adopts the dog, placing it in the hands of Clark (Richard Masur), the sled-dog handler.
