Agreed. What you were expressing is understood, lorin. It truly is a shame that things turned out this way...just as the story you told us a few days before that incident is also a shame. But that is still how things are.

one of my c/o's from my old unit was killed in a car wreck today. her name was Judy Sardelich. I have no details so i have no idea what happened. she was 46 and married. we weren't extremely close, though we worked together for around 3 years. she was great to work with, always in a great mood, with jokes to keep everyone loose and running.
still kind of in shock about the whole thing, reached out to a few of my ex-coworkers to see about the funeral.
life is too damn short.

Today was a long day. We are getting visitors tomorrow so I had to close and do a bunch of last minute things. I'm tired. I did manage to find cheap black work shoes in record time though. About ten minutes. So that went well.

that was lovely sarge. eulogistic. it's weird how sometimes the loss of a seemingly inconsequential person in the landscape can sometimes hit you.sgt.null wrote:one of my c/o's from my old unit was killed in a car wreck today. her name was Judy Sardelich. Now I feel like a schmuck. I was so tired when I walked in and opened the watch I just bitched without reading anyone else's posts. Sarge, sorry for your loss and Lucimay is right, that was a beautiful description, you do have a way with words.
Sorus, just north of 17th on Mission is a store called Mission express and they have a bunch of hoochie mama jeans and boots on display but inside they also have a plethora of cheap functional comfy black sneakers. I got my new ones for twenty bucks. No name converse knockoffs with black toes and soles instead of white.

Sorry about your loss, Sarge. It's the suddenness of the loss that hits so hard in a case like that. Remember the jokes and the laughs with a smile.
I splurged for some good tickets for the White Sox game this afternoon. I was going to take my dad as a kind of birthday/father's day present, but the heat index today is supposed to be over 100 so he backed out yesterday. No sense making it an endurance test for him. So I called my brother in law and he'll go instead.

Sorry Sorus and SD, the queen of self doubt was having a moment. Felt a little too self pitying so deleted it. My apologies and here is what I deleted....Savor Dam wrote:Agreed. So, I went to court yesterday for a permanent restraining order against Elijah. It made me sad. This brilliant Crazy 24 year old has no one to speak to. He is terrified of everything so I know they are eating him up in jail. A virgin who doesnt know how to look in a person's eyes. No one in his whole family even cares to speak to him. Shackled and cuffed in a holding cell. It just made me sad. I had always hoped I would be sitting an audience while he got his diploma, not watching him standing in front of a judge in chains and an orange jump suit. Anyway, the hearing for the restraining order was postponed till the 22nd. The criminal case won't come up for months. His current bail is $20000 with no reduction.
Understand, I am not getting soft or backing off, just sad.
Life goes on.

Aw, lorin. I was wondering what sorus and SD were talking about.
For you as well:

While we all understand that you are trying to distance yourself from these children you brought in to your life for so many years, and agree with your reasons why, they are still the children of your heart you cherished and cared for many years. And while our children can and will disappoint us on occasion, they still claim their place in our heart.
Please do not ever feel the need to justify your feelings regarding them to us. We are here to listen and embrace them with you. Vent away, whether in anger, sadness, frustration, and occasionally, joy...

Sarge, I'm sorry for your loss. I lost a similar relationship shortly before I first joined the Watch. One of my old school friends. Like you say, no-one I was especially close to, but someone I liked. He died of a heart attack at 20. An athlete, extremely fit. Crazy how someone could just drop dead like that, and suddenly I've got one less friendly face to run into at a pub in my hometown. Thoughts are with you, and her family and loved ones.
Lorin: self pity? Ah, my heart. For you to have empathy for someone who has brought you such fear and pain...what can I say? All you speak of is your sadness for another, and the lost hopes you had for that other. Queen of self-doubt you may be. Also Queen of Selflessness.

Sorry to hear of your loss, Sarge. Losing a friend/coworker can be devestating. I lost my best friend last year. Sending positive vibes out to you all. Smiles are contagious, so here you go:

My job is becoming humdrummier by the moment, which is why I am posting more and more during the work day.
Just remember, love is like sunlight -- a boundless, renewable resource -- but we still have to manage our own happiness, lest it become overgrown with weeds and other people's emotional Roundup. And sadness is part of the cycle, like rain. Don't seek to avoid it, just put it in perspective, and love people where they are, rooted or not, as much as you can. [/bad analogy]
This is why dw will never be a poet.
But I reiterate -- positive vibes out to all of you!

Sorry for your loss, Sarge. Things like that hit close to home even if you did not know the person very well.
And Lorin, what I deleted from my earlier post was:
That you still have a sense of empathy for the human race after dealing with what you've worked and lived with on a daily basis for how many years is amazing to me. You're one of the strongest people I know, and there is no weakness in feeling sorrow. You tried to set him on the right path after the rest of society had already turned their backs on him, but in the end, he chose his own path. It is sad. It's tragic.
