The incredible "e"

Post by lorin »

I was thinking (trying to stay awake) on the drive home how screwy the English language really is. One thing that is really interesting is how the addition of the lowly "e" can completely change to meaning of a word completely.

spin spine
car care
far fear

more?

When I was a child, there was a show on PBS called Electric Company. They had a song about this (which, thank you, is now running through my head!-LOL):

Who can turn a Can, Into a Cane?
Who can turn a Man, into a Mane?
It's elementary for "Silent E"

Cub, Cube
Rub, Rube
Tub, Tube
Pan, Pane
Run, Rune

Lots of these...

BTW, Silent E was written by the great satirist of the '50s and '60s, Tom Leher.

In the spirit of his work, my example for this thread is dedicated to former US Vice President, Dan Quayle: potato, potatoe.
