I'm not very good at compliments for the sake of compliments (heh, just ask my wife), but I'd like to throw out a big blanket compliment to everybody.
I haven't felt this at home at a site since the old local BBS days (Commodore 64, baby... 1400 baud) back in Reno. There's not a single person here I don't like. Not surprising for SRD (deserving a big compliment/thanks himself) fans, everyone here is pretty sharp, realistic, and strangely cheerful (taking "Joy is in the ears that hear" to heart).
Big compliment to Jay, Mhoram, Vain, and the rest of you guys making this such a fun, inviting site.
As far as us midwesterners go, I'm definately down for getting some grub somewhere one of these weekends. I'm off for Sicily in early March, but any time before then.

"It is not the literal past that rules us, save, possibly, in a biological sense. It is images of the past. Each new historical era mirrors itself in the picture and active mythology of its past or of a past borrowed from other cultures. It tests its sense of identity, of regress or new achievement against that past.”

The party wouldn't have been of any intrest to anyone who valued their sanity. It was one of those events where people would stop and
at the people in the yard(I mean they had the right. It was like 41 degrees). But for those who didn't value their sanity, it rocked!

What a great thing to say, Danlo. I really appreciate that! I've always admired (envied) your knowledge of all the fantasy/sci-fi books. (I apologize for my behavior as well.) Thanks again, Danlo. You have a lot of class.

"Do you have a wife?"
"At one time."
"What happened to her?"
"She has been dead."
"How long ago did she die?"
"Two thousand years."

How does a blade of grass thank the sun?
Yao Ming, the NBA basketball player, used that saying to thank the team and fans of the team he played for in Shanghai before he left for the US. It fits here because there are so many who I can mention that I'm afraid that I would miss someone.
I, until now, have never been one for hanging out much on these types of forums. I forget what the reason was that first brought me to this site, other than I had been rereading sections of TWL at the time. After lurking for a couple of days, I remember reading someone's comment that everyone here was friendly. They were right.
Current events, music, sports, all are discussed here by genuinely knowledgeable people rationally. I find the Hall of Gifts fascinating. I have no talent myself for such things but there are some truly creative people here.
I will mention Vain. During the time that the server was down, (perhaps we can call that time the Siege of Revelstone
) I sent him a couple of emails. I'm sure I wasn't the only one. He handled those inquiries with the grace and tact, that he always displays.
Dutchess - Let me know next time you are in Chicago. Perhaps Syl and others can meet in what we could call a midwestern Giantclave.
Drool, you are right when you say that this is the way the "real" world should act. Sadly it is not. But here and there you find places that stand out from the run of the mill. This is one.

Like Damelon, I'd like to adress the community in general. I use or have used many forums, and this one here has possibly the best atmosphere of them all. This might be because there aren't many users, so it's all more family-like, or because of the basic topic, which isn't one to attract your standard net trash talker. Doesn't really matter why, the important thing is that it is this way.
Many people here impress me by their understanding of literature, their wit and general attitude. You're all very intelligent and, more importantly, open minded. One thing I've always loved about internet communication is that it breaks down barriers. People which normally wouldn't ever discuss anything in 'real' life, because they don't expect the other one a worthy partner based on his appearance, age or origin, or simply never would meet each other, get to talk, to know each other's opinion and respect it as well as the person. This forum proves this as good as it can possibly be proven.

Lao Tzu said, "Not exhalting the gifted prevents quarreling." I don't like the idea of complimenting some, because I don't want others to feel bad.
Fortunately, that isn't an issue here. I'm so impressed with everyone here that there's no point in listing you all individually.
20-21 years ago, I read TCTC, and got a friend to read them. We discussed them at length.
And I haven't had anyone to talk to about them since then!!!!
Then, several weeks ago, someone in the philosophy chatroom on mIRC (which of you?) told me about kevinswatch. S/he figured I'd be interested because my nick on mIRC is Foamfollower. I've had that nick for a couple of years there
(I even have a room there called Revelstone, but nobody ever visits
)
So I come here, figuring it could be interesting in one way or another. And I find it filled with people who love the Land like I do!!! People who know it so well that they have reminded me of aspects I'd forgotten! People who like to explore new ideas, and can do so intelligently!
Ladies and gentlemen, I am delighted and privileged to be among you!

Sylvanus and Damelon (and anyone else who might be interested) -- I won't know for another month or so what my vacation schedule will be for the entire year. I will be angling to get a long weekend in July or August, though. There are few places as pleasant to go walking/hang out than the Chicago lakefront in Grant Park in the summertime! As soon as I know if I can get a long weekend, I will let you guys know!
A Midwestern Giantclave would be FUN! If you guys don't like Harry Caray's, I am always up for pizza half a foot thick!

That was me F&F (was using the nick UnbelieverDjak). Glad you came to check out the site.
Props for the Lao Tzu quote, btw.

Ah, Sylvanus, it was you!!!
As my Foamfollower persona might say: Ah, my friend, you did me a great service. Joy is in the ears that hear, but no ears can hear kevinswatch in any way other than joyfully!

Dutchess - I have no long vacations planned for this summer. I'll be in Florida at the end of April, and I'm planning on going on a cruise in the fall. Only the weekend before Labor Day weekend is, at this time, bad for me this summer. (I meet friends from Northern Illinois U., where I went to college, every year that weekend.)
Harry Caray's is fine with me. The food there is very good. It's tough to get a reservation there when the Cubs are in town. But then pizza is good too.

Heh, what are you talking about, danlo? I don't ever remember you getting edgy with me. You're a good guy and a longtime vet. Without people like yourself, Kevin's Watch would be a boring place and a failure.danlo wrote:Jay--sorry I sometimes get edgy w/u... u r the man! Everyone here rules. All I did was set up the site. But each of you contribute the ideas, comments and topics which make this place great. Three Cheers.-jay
