They don't take long looks at anything, because they lack the courage.
The way to despair is to refuse to have any kind of experience, and the novel, of course, is a way to have experience."

Yes, but dang! You're ready for anything!!

In our house we maintain a "flee bag", a travel bag ready with a change of clothing, passports, medications, and so on in case political instability or ethnic violence becomes such that we have to leave the area or country unexpectedly. Recently I saw the movie Salt where Jolie's character reaches into the bottom of a trunk and brings out a backpack which opens to reveal guns, wigs, cash in various denominations, assorted passports... I said to my husband, Hey, her flee bag is way cooler than ours!

I also forgot that in my handbag I always have a scarf of some kind. Churches here expect women to cover their heads during prayer; and sometimes it's better to cover my whiteness when traveling in certain areas. 8)

Heh. I try to be. This version is a bit toned down - it used to include a small first aid kit and some other stuff. One of my favorite authors recently posted a guide to building an emergency pack, and I saw a couple of things I wanted to add to mine, but on a tight budget these days.

I blame Heinlein's Tunnel in the Sky for a lot of stuff, I used to (okay, occasionally still do) like to imagine how I'd survive ending up on a random alien planet. Figure if I can survive that I'm set for more practical disasters, much like preparing for a zombie invasion also prepares one for more mundane situations.
