New Primus album!

Post by Cambo »

Bought and listened today. Took me a while to get into it. I'd heard Claypool compare it to their debut Frizzle Fry, which had me wetting my pants, but there's not sock you in the gut stomp of "Too Many Puppies" or "To Defy the Laws of Tradition." The comparisons are more in strange, dark and creepy atmospherics.

Otherwise, the comparison I kept making was to Claypool's Flying Frog Brigade- no surprise since that's where drummer Jay Lane came from. The moments of strange swampy funk certainly recall the the first volume of their live set. This is easily the most jammy and funky I've heard Primus on a studio album.

Technically excellent, and you can hear the musicians having fun. This is an album to settle in and groove to rather than one that leaves you gasping for breath with your jaw on the floor (as some of Primus' other material has done to me). I like it, and I think it's going to grow on me even more with repeated listens.

But, I miss the punch.

Dang, I haven't got this yet. I'll have to take a trip to the record store.....
Dandelion don't tell no lies
Dandelion will make you wise
Tell me if she laughs or cries
Blow away dandelion

I'm afraid there's no denying
I'm just a dandelion
a fate I don't deserve.

After a couple more listens, I can recommend it with even more confidence. Definitely worth having. My nostalgia for the heavier tunes aside; you can't expect a band to stay in the same place forever.

I finally got it. I'm listening to the new Evanescence cd first, then I'll listen to Green Naugahyde.
