Poor Kitteh!! (update)

Post by deer of the dawn »

Sam here had his leg broken near the hip socket and needed a surgical pin. For our vet, it was experimental surgery; I got the surgical pin through a surgeon friend of mine. The good news is that he still has 4 legs, and will probably heal up good; he's young, not even full grown.

I'm glad your vet was willing to do the surgery on an experimental basis, since you posted you were having difficulty finding someone to do the surgery.

Feel well soon, Sam!

Yay! Glad you found someone to do the surgery!

Sam looks a little like our Mr. Pumpkin Kitty, who went to Kitteh Heaven several years ago. We still misses him, we does.

Yay Sam! :bwave:

And yay DotD for being a responsible cat-mama and going the extra miles to get him the help he needed.

That's so awesome! He might need some extra catnip treats though to keep his mind distracted from the stitches... :P

Yesterday I let him outside for a few minutes. He was like, Hey, I remember Outside, Outside rocks! But after a few minutes of fun he was starting to hurt so I put him back in his room (a small bathroom has become his recovery room for now). But he's doing well. Still, his leg does look like a big, raw chicken leg, doesn't it? At least he's cleaned it up now. :)

How sweet of you to ask! Sam had a setback when he gnawed on the end of the surgical pin... not good. After the vet reinserted it and stitched the skin over the end better, and another week of daily antibiotic injections, Sam is gimping around. We kept him very confined in a small bathroom for a week, now we're letting him roam the house a little. He is bored and wants to play. He'll be fine after a while, and hopefully will not limp for the rest of his life. :)

Too bad you didn't get to use a cat cone. Cat's wearing cones are funny. :)

(P.S. Glad everything is turning out okay.)

I was trying to think how I could fabricate a cone, but he left it alone after that. He's doing really well two weeks later. He should have the pin out after two more weeks. His fur is (finally) starting to grow in and he no longer seems to have any pain; the leg is just weak. We're calling him Sam Gurgu (gurgu means "lame" in Hausa). :)

Sam ended up pulling the pin out again. It was very freaky. By then it had been long enough we just told the vet, take it out. As you can see, he is doing well. Here he is ruthlessly murdering the strapping from a box of paper reams.

Should have used the cat cone. It's not too late - all cats should wear them, at all times. If you can't get one from your vet, you can make one out of 1/4 inch galvanized steel. Just cut, bend, and rivet into place.

I sense you're a dog person, WF... ;)

DotD, glad to hear Sam's doing well. He looks properly feisty there. :)

It's amazing how fast most animals heal. He looks great DotD! Give him an extra chin tip scritch from me.

Moose was up and jumping just hours after bringing him home from his near death toxic poisoning from greenies incident when he was a puppy. Sox was quick to heal from his leg and tail bone reset when I first found him and my piranha used to bite the heck out of one another and yet re-grow half a fin in 24 hours. You could practically see the bones and webbing growing if you watched long enough. Animals are just amazing and he looks happy and sassy. I want to woodgie his belly and kiss his fuzzy orange snoot and make stupid cuddly cutesy baby noises. Yes, I am weak and pathetic and can't resist a cute fuzzy animal.
