Lately FB just seems like a place for people with too much time on their hands to post 50 times a day. I feel like hiding some people just because I don't need to know their every thought and move today!!

I joined FB a few years ago and find it's the best way to keep in touch with my son, who lives on another continent. I actually un-friended over 100 people at one point because it was just too much (no one I un-friended even noticed, I think; it was people I barely knew 20 years ago, stuff like that).

Maybe it's because it's Christmas break and a lot of people have extra time. But really, go pick up a book, learn to knit, dust off that karaoke machine you bought on Home Shopping, walk the dog, or something else besides posting on FB. Thank you, thus endeth my rant. :soapbox:

I log in to facebook almost every day,
and tend to use it for all of 30 seconds.

Very entertaining.

I've been kind of hooked on it today. A friend's daughter had a preemie about a month ago, and they've been on pins and needles ever since, wondering when they'd be able to bring the baby home. Today was the day. 8) My friend and her family live in Indianapolis and I'm in DC, so there's no other way I could have shared the day with them without driving there myself.

Other than that, tho, it's kind of a time suck...

I try to only keep family and friends that post interesting things and links and descriptions of where and what they did.
Nothing worse than seeing a pic of some location with no description other than "cute".
Share what you're doing or don't post anything.
No one asks questions or gives details.
It's frustrating.
FB should be great.
It's not.

I'll take that as a compliment, as I know you comment occasionally on things I share.

Family and friends are what it's supposed to be about. I guess it's just that a couple of my friends have nothing better to do but post links to two dozen videos/cat pictures/ inspirational mottos or whatever. No, I mean it, one friend of mine is going through divorce and her kids were at Dad's for the weekend and FB was her only way to relate to the world so she literally posted like 30 things in 2 hours. Geeeez.... I would feel like a real heel hiding her, but am I any better scrolling by all of it?

I definitely hear you. I have in laws who post scintillating things such as "hey, I made mac and cheese from the box and here is a picture." Remember people - you don't need to post every thought that hits your boredom-addled mind.

I have cousins that feel compelled to treat Facebook like a combination of a diary and a multigenerational chat-line feud between mother, daughter, and daughter-in-law...who seem not to care that *everyone* can see their ravings. It's that no-budget Hee-Haw soap opera you remember from your childhood, but produced by Jerry Springer. I reminds me of why I love visiting my home town, but never stay more than a few days at a time.

FB posts from people trying to drum up business tend to make me roll my eyes. No, I'm not interested in discussing Shaklee.

I was kind of bothered by a friend of mine who always posts in caps. It's a pet peeve of mine. I asked him recently why he always shouts when he posts on fb. He told me his eyes aren't good enough to see the lower case letters on his phone. Reason enough, I guess.

sigh... the trend of people trying to make themselves feel better by attention-seeking over things that are piddling... some days is more-than-mildly depressing. blehhh

OTOH, I have had some pretty fun times on FB... when I ask a question that's of interest (either general or to some subgroup) and is not lame, people just flock to comment.
(last year, early summer: "Anyone planning any adventures for the summer?")
Cause they're so starved for remotely real interaction.
Cause they've been trying to rely on FB.
Right.

Damelon, did you mention to him that the lower-case letters are in the same places as the upper-case letters, which are the same places they're in on his computer keyboard?

I've got a cousin who's on Facebook but just can't seem to get the hang of this newfangled technology. She sometimes ends her comments with "Love," -- that's Love, comma -- as if she's signing a letter and expects her name to appear at the end of her post by magic. (Her e-mails to me almost always consist of forwarded crap. Guess what her Facebook status posts usually are? ) And then there was the time when Batty and Magickmaker were being snarky to one another for fun, and my cousin sort of scolded them and said they should be nicer to one another. I had to tell her they were joking.

In other rants, what is the deal with "Status Shuffle"? Seriously, you can't think of anything original to say?

Status Shuffle - the Facebook equivalent of a reverse answering machine, for those who don't have the time or talent to be clever or interesting, but know they must satisfy their fans who hang on their every status word.

I do like the "change your pic to a highschool one" type of thing. Those are usually funny.
I'm friends with a few people who I don't know but the are interesting. I friended them because we were on a mutual fan page and I liked what they said.
Some coupon pages and comedy ones.
Science ones too.

I guess that's more of a variation of signing up for email bulletins.

I think I'm going to purge some uninteresting friends today not that I'm thinking about it.

Lol, I have rice in my pantry but I haven't cooked it yet. Otherwise it would be in the fridge, I guess. Why would you keep cooked rice in the pantry. Lol.

Seconded!

I think in my friend's case he's trying to convey excitement about his newest dance. I almost said something to him when I saw him recently, but decided it wasn't worth getting into.
