That sucks. That's almost exactly what happened to me at the last company I worked for, and I opted to leave because I realized the ship was sinking. Which was smart. What wasn't smart was accepting the first thing that came across my path because I was terrified of being unemployed. I don't know enough about your situation to offer advice except what I learned the hard way - if you do jump ship, make sure the lifeboat isn't full of sharks.Rigel wrote:Fun day. Two people downsized at our branch. One of them was me.
Another person was let go for performance reasons. Which in a way worked out for me; I was given a choice between the severance package, and a demotion to the suddenly open position. I get to keep my salary, but the different job duties mean I'll be giving up some commissions. And, of course, there's the fact that it's a step back for me.

Oh, a change is coming, feel these doors now closing
Is there no world for tomorrow, if we wait for today?
Yes, cool. I'll join the club!
Ya see, I have this problem with doctors: I hate them! I usually have to be on deaths doorstep before I go, and I suppose I'm just not in the mood to have some doctor telling me I need to have all these tests done. I dunno. I'm guessing it's stress related (or a virus, as you say, Peter). Some days it's worse than others and (at least over the last couple of months) I have had about three days when it disappeared completely, and it always feels better when I eat. Go figure! Anyway, I'll see how I am a few months from now. In the meantime I'm very happy to attend club meetings and whinge...er...talk.

And I agree with everyone else, Rigel. That sucks!

Rigel -- that deserves a group hug.
The kids are at an anime convention for the weekend. I've had the house to myself since Thursday night. So far I've gone to a birthday party, gone out for lunch and a movie, and gone to work. So when do I get to enjoy my nice, quiet home?

Sorus, it was basically a choice between unemployment and risk looking for a new job... or continued employment, and looking for a new job on the sly. Which wasn't really that hard of a choice for me.
Ali, thanks... I always appreciate group hugs

I have been scoping out the possibility of a new job. I just wanted to suggest usajobs.gov . I have gotten two interviews out of the site. The great thing about this site is they are jobs all over the world and transferable, which is awesome. The other thing, which is obvious, is they are Fed jobs, which comes with a lot of perks.Rigel wrote: looking for a new job on the sly.

Finally broke in my new treadmill. Feels good now, but sucked just a little in the moment... rather, it was I, sucking air just a little too hard.
See, I sort of fell off the hard-workout wagon at Halloween, and slid all the way down the Holiday calendar, one group feast at a time.
But, now it's back to the good life, and the proof is the way I feel right now. Pleasantly tired, with that tingly 'lightness of being' feeling at the back of my neck that I get when I run more than 4 miles.

I stayed up way too late last night, and was awakened far too early this morning (okay, it was 10am, but still) by the girls, calling me to let me know that I could come and pick them up whenever. So I stumble out of bed and turn on the faucet to get a glass of water, and the faucet makes this sound:
mmpmmshpt
Hunh, I think. So I go to the kitchen and turn on the faucet, and it makes the same sound:
mmpmmshpt
So then I look out the window, and next to the edge of the property I see a couple of our maintenance guys standing next to a plumbing truck, looking at the hillside (we're on a hill overlooking the next apartment complex). I can also see what looks suspiciously like a large patch of runoff down the hill.
So I get dressed and go out to the elevator to go down to my car to get the kids -- and there's a big sign that says there's been a water pipe break, so the building will be without water and heat all day.
Luckily it's not freezing cold here, and the snowstorm they kept warning us about has stayed to our south. So basically it's just been inconvenient to be without water. We stopped on the way home for brunch and to buy about ten gallons of water -- enough for drinking, hand washing, and flushing (after a fashion) the toilet for four people for the day.
We've been watching the crew's progress all afternoon. They brought in a little baby backhoe and have dug a hole in the hillside to get to the broken pipe. Right now, it's dark, and all we can see is the backhoe, scooping bucketfuls of muddy water out of the hole. We are assuming that the plumbers are down in the hole, swapping out the broken pipe or patching it or whatever. I certainly hope the water is back on tomorrow morning, but I'm not betting on it.

You're funny.Savor Dam wrote:Well...hopefully your building has showers for the folks who bike to work or exercise during lunch. Pretend you do one of those things...

We have an actual fitness center at work, yes, and I suppose I could drive into DC and shower if I absolutely have to. (Hadn't thought of that, actually....) Tomorrow's a federal holiday, tho, so the only place I will really have to go is the grocery store, and I don't have to clean up for that. (Unless the water's still not fixed by tomorrow night; then I'll have to find a laundromat, too, ugh. But again, not an activity I have to dress up for....)

I was just told of another job opening and encouraged to apply.
I had thought the position was filled, but no.
I woke up today feeling so down. I prayed and realized today is all I have, and I have so much to look forward to. Changed my whole outlook.

Geez, lorin, that's rough!! Sending prayers and healing thoughts your way. (btw you have the most beautiful avatar.)
Thanks for the luck wishes! I kind of have to think if this is a job I really, really want, or not. I'm already being considered for something else too... awaiting developments... film at 11.

Good luck to those in the job change department. I too am in limbo waiting to hear back. Hugs to you Lorin and hoping your back gets better soon. I'm just about to head into work myself. Hopefully it's not a typical Monday.
