The Descendants

Post by [Syl] »

I seriously don't understand the high marks this film got. The acting and story were alright, but that's about the best I can say. More epic walks than Lord of the Rings and more Hawaiian music than any man should have to listen to. Nice scenery, but I was bored silly. While I usually enjoy Matt Lillard and Beau Bridges, their appearances were mostly flat. The only highlight for me was the Sid character.
"It is not the literal past that rules us, save, possibly, in a biological sense. It is images of the past. Each new historical era mirrors itself in the picture and active mythology of its past or of a past borrowed from other cultures. It tests its sense of identity, of regress or new achievement against that past.”

Agreed, very boring and I would add very depressing also. I usually don't like movies that make me want to slit my wrists.

Movie studios often lump payments made to critics for good reviews under "marketing" on their P&L sheets.
