I need to give Dream Theater another chance. Of Sigur Ros, Mogwai, and G,YBE!, the only one I could really get into is Mogwai. Ambient just isn't my thing.
Since I haven't given it yet in this thread (and it also shifts around all the time):
Tool
Queens of the Stone Age
Alice in Chains
Dredg
Clutch
Others that can get shifted in at any time...
Pelican
Calexico
A Perfect Circle
Failure
Nine Inch Nails
Metallica (yes, mostly old Metallica, but I'm not anti-new Metallica)

"It is not the literal past that rules us, save, possibly, in a biological sense. It is images of the past. Each new historical era mirrors itself in the picture and active mythology of its past or of a past borrowed from other cultures. It tests its sense of identity, of regress or new achievement against that past.”

It's not my fault that those damn brits keep stealing everything we invent and making it better. It happened to rock n roll and it happened to the American Musical form (EXCLUDING Andrew Lloyd Weber, what a tool). They just consistently are on the cutting edge of the Genre. Sound off every movement in rock and it was almost always started by a British band. First modern rock band- the Beatles. First Prog Rock band- Pink Floyd. First Rock Opera- The Who, First Punk band- The Sex Pistols.
The only real rockers they leave us with are Hendrix, Clapton, and *gulp* Dylan. Hendrix was only appreciated IN Britain in his day, and one could make an argument that Dylan sucks. Oh well, you will never take our Clapton. (you can borrow him when you like though, If you are going to record "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" with him.)

Well, crap. That certainly makes my bite my tongue. Well, even though I was wrong about Clapton, the truth better supports my argument. Especially when you consider that Clapton's primary influence were American blues artists. At least we have... who is left? Even Slash is british.danlo wrote:Hate to break this to you but Clapton's British...again my fav American artist is Neil Young, but he's Canadian! At least the greatest "sheer" guitar player, Joe Satriani, is American (and Eddie Van Halen's pretty good too--but he severely limited his potential...)!
OK, I will play along too.
(in no particular order, except the #1 spot)
Pink Floyd
Yes
The Alan Parsons Project
Led Zeppelin
Styx
(funny... I just noticed that this American really
likes British bands! sans Styx)
