Cambo's Writing Club Stuff

Post by Cambo »

I'm going to post some of the worthier pieces of writing I'm producing at my writing club. Feedback welcome.

Deafening

How loud this world must be to him
To have worn those earmuffs his whole life.

How unbearably piercing the sound of reality
To have him constantly humming that tune.

How the truth must roar in his ears
As he strains to shout out his lies.

And how quiet it seems to me
As I just sit and let it be.

Hello Darkness (A Visit From an Old Friend)

Hello Darkness. Welcome back. Take a seat. Make yourself at home. Can I get you anything? A hot cup of tears? A piece of pathos? A lovely slice of apathy with a side of cynicism and despair? I’ve got some motivation that’s been stagnating since your last visit. Should be lovely and tender by now.

So, how have you been? Still breaking hearts? Playing the field? You rogue, you never change. Me? I’ve been good, actually. Made some positive changes in my life. Met some beautiful people. Existed day to day in a place of hope and well being. I won’t go on about it. I know how you hate that stuff. Seen any of our mutual friends lately? Oh, I completely forgot you knew him. He just doesn’t seem like your type. You’re quite the socialite, aren’t you? Careful though, those artistic guys, they’ll just use you for catharsis. Next thing you know the demo you made together gets them signed and they’re laughing all the way to the bank. See how often he calls you then.

Right, shall we have a game then? Not much else to do round here, I’m afraid. Okay, you go first.....and you’ve landed on past mistakes. Yeah? Oh-five, would it have been? Shit, I do remember that! Man, I hadn’t thought about that in years. Does really show up the flaws in my character aye? All right, my turn....I got self reproach. Well, thinking about your turn, that wasn’t an isolated incident, and it does just go to show that I’m not as cool a human being as I like to think I am, you know? I mean, do you think I go around just telling myself these stories about how great I am, while I’m just ignoring the fact I’m a shitty person down under it? Tell me honestly....Well, I asked I guess. Your turn again.

Crap is that the time? Hey, it’s been great having you, but I’m expecting Light any minute now, and I know how you two don’t get along. It’s a shame, you know, I think you guys have a lot more in common than you think. Oh well, nothing like sibling rivalry, aye? Alright, until next time then.

Hey, Cambo: I think I know your "old friend". That piece really resonated with me.

Yeah, he gets around all right (although maybe he's a she when he visits you, no?). Glad you liked it, Sea.

Exercise: sitting front row at a fashion show, when a clown holding a fire hose and a bear with a bag of chips turn up late. What do you say to them?

Guys, people are staring, what the fuck? Where have you been? Where the Christ did you get that hose? Man, I don't want attention, this stuff's kicking in like a bitch. I tell you, man, some of this shit's too much. There was a lady in fur. She could've been wearing you, bro. How messed up is that? Keep your head down, Yogi, these animals will skin you and make you a hat.
You're way too bright Bozo. Your makeup's melting. Anyone ever tell you you have beautiful blue eyes?
Whoa, check out the feather chick on stage. She's skin and bones, bro! Fuck, I don't know why they don't just trot these clothes out on coathangers, cut out the middleman, you know?
Can I have a chip, bro?

Memories of Fairlie Tce

The flat was a dive, but it was a home away from home.

I sat on that couch, stoned out of my brain, more times than I could count. Looking around bleary eyed at all the familiar sights. The piano, guitars and drum set on which intoxicated musos would create such wonderful jams. The ashtray that was always overflowing, leavings of cigarettes and pipe bowls thick as moon dust. No-one could ever find a lighter when in need, then they would multiply while we weren’t looking. A goon sack on the table, from which flowed a river of slurred words and unfocused eyes.

A toxic environment, perhaps. But also one of love, of companionship and laughter. Of slapped together food and easily offered hospitality. A home away from home.

Why not leave this place?
Something new waits over there
We can cross over

The "Hello Darkness" one once again makes me thankful that you live, and write these things down, and share them. =)
So refreshing; sanity. One of those "putting things into words" when your reader can't necessarily quite manage.

You have a gift that nobody else does; it doesn't have to be "better" than everyone else's; the point is it's unique and of great value.
"People without hope not only don't write novels, but what is more to the point, they don't read them.
They don't take long looks at anything, because they lack the courage.
The way to despair is to refuse to have any kind of experience, and the novel, of course, is a way to have experience."
-Flannery O'Connor

"In spite of much that militates against quietness there are people who still read books. They are the people who keep me going."

Deafening is ringing in my ears. It reminds me of my father and I. Maybe not the way you intended but it still seems to describe us, especially since my mother departed. My father is a constant state of motion, noise, talk (blather) gossip, computers, phones, talk, talk, talk. And I just sit there and nod, grunt, groan, simmer.......and say nothing.

Good work, Cambo, very good.
The loudest truth I ever heard was the softest sound.

Full Circle

Past and present collide
You find yourself gaping
At a familiar face
You hoped not to meet again

The anxious recognition
Made strange by being here
Far ahead of yourself
Where you had thought it was safe

You struggle to reconcile
The then with the now
To reach a conclusion
That’s not a repeat of the same

Blink

While I am here
There is music
There is laughter
There is love
That is enough.

I Want You Here

Right now
I want you here
Just here
Not to hold
Not to kiss
Not to fuck
Not right now
Just here
With me

Love, Laughter, Truth

Savage laughter
Primal rage
Channelled to humour
Pain and catharsis.

Screaming truth
Ranting reason
Irate sheepherder
Howling at the void

Weary cynic
Disappointed
Surprised at nothing
Raised eyebrow smirk

Raping taboos
Norms punctured
Reckless iconoclast
Pugnacious apostate

Cults rejected
Idols spat on
Clear eyed seeker
Sacrilegious spirit

Claiming hate
Teaching love
Reluctant romantic
Directing the ride

Here and gone
Briefly burning
Flash of humanity
Glowing after image
