How do you feel today? v. 3.0

I've always wondered why you guys call them opossums. I mean, here they're just plain old possums (even though they're different from the ones you have). Is it that a long-long time ago people used to go "what is that?" and someone would say, "it's a possum" and the other person would say "oh, a possum" and somewhere along the line you lost the "h" and the word "a"??????

Ohhhhhh (possum!)

Thanks Murrin. Maybe I should have got off my bottom and wiki-ed it. However, that's fascinating. I've been looking at it the wrong way: opossums were discovered before our possums (at least by Europeans). As it says in that link: The Virginia opossum was the first animal to be named an opossum; usage of the name was published in 1610. So, yeah: the original usage/word is opossum. For some reason I was thinking it was the other way round (which was silly of me, I know <grin>).

collective "awwww" about letting that possum curl up against you...Cameraman Jenn wrote:He named him "Ain'tFerLong" because he told me he thought he was ain't fer long in this life without his momma. After consulting with one of his biologist friends we started feeding the baby watered down heavy cream from an eye dropper. I fell in love. I would take him out of his bed, feed him and then hit the couch half reclining and put him directly over my heart and cup my hand over him and he would wind his little tail around my pinky finger and fall asleep. He grew bigger and stronger and after a few weeks we started him on regular food, bits of table scraps supplemented by the "milk" he had been getting.
For all you know, without your holding that possum a bunch, he might not have grown up strong and healthy.
this... is beautiful. When my Dad brings home cool things he finds outside you can literally see him light up so much so that it's almost a spiritual transcendence.
Oh, and I just got a court summons RE the accident I had with that motorcyclist last October on Saturday.

I am perpetually horrified that someone can just get hit and lose a leg in a matter of seconds... and then that person's life will never be the same.
I have been really stressed and anxious about everything I can think of to fear about these last few days.

I am just really disappointed and frustrated with the faithlessness of people. I'm not talking about religious faith; but faithfulness between people. My husband and I have the same frustration-- that we are really committed to our work, we really believe in it, and to so many others it's just a job. They can come and go as they please and show up or not show up, whatever. *sigh*
Wish I had a cute baby possum to cuddle with right about now.

Not everyone lives for their work. It's nice that you have passion for what you do, but not everyone does. It doesn't make them 'faithless', it makes them more interested in something else I would think? Why not ask people what they *are* passionate about?deer of the dawn wrote:I am just really disappointed and frustrated with the faithlessness of people. I posted above about the co-worker who couldn't wrap her brain around Pagan holidays. One of my Pagan friends had a very practical answer: Maybe she's just not invested in the relationship and doesn't bother to remember all the details of the lives of people she's not close to. Which makes sense, as I certainly do that -- most times, I don't remember what's going on in my co-workers' lives unless they say something that jogs my memory. Hopefully it will make it easier for me to say "eh, whatever," when my co-worker does it again.
It's not an exact analogy, obviously, but it's along the same lines. People who don't have the same level of passion about something you're passionate about might seem to be faithless from your point of view -- but not necessarily from theirs.

I have some cds from a band who recorded works on the day of the equinox, solstices, etc. if you are interested, Ali. Their music style may not be your cuppa, though. But, they did very lovely releases for each plus one for samhain. This is my favourite one of the four equinox/solstice works and is from the winter solstice one Coil - white rainbow

Maybe faithless was too strong a word-- just non-committed to the work, the relationship, to life. Christians are supposed to do whatever we do with all our heart. But I guess that's a lot to ask. Even when I was a wallpaper hanger, I always tried to do my best although I was often aware that no one would ever see that seam unless they were moving the fridge, or something... even though my heart was at home, with my kids and dogs and garden... it's not just about work, it's about character. I'm just really tired, though, and in that space where I feel that too much is falling on me because others won't dive in and take part. Oh well.
It's a beautiful day today. The beginning of rainy season is always lovely. The sky puts on a show and the air is soft and cool and stuff is clean and green.

I can relate to that totally (from a non-christian point of viewdeer of the dawn wrote:Maybe faithless was too strong a word-- just non-committed to the work, the relationship, to life. Sometimes people just get worn down. They lose the faith in what they are doing and have done. Sometimes people are trapped by circumstance and all they can give anymore is just to be decent at what they do.deer of the dawn wrote:I am just really disappointed and frustrated with the faithlessness of people. These are much younger people than I, living within their own culture and families... I guess I just don't have much sympathy when they are lucky enough in this country to even HAVE a job, and then they act like it's all rights and no responsibilities. I know what you are saying and believe me, I know what it's like to be worn down, but when you are 24 and just started a job and start showing up late and leaving early and making excuses and sitting around rather than "have a crack"... I'm old enough to be their mother and I manage to show up every day on time and stay the duration, why can't they? grrr.lorin wrote:Sometimes people just get worn down. Hope everybody had/is having a good Friday.
My day started with coffee and donuts in honor of our new member of the Secretarial Dept. managing team. Then I had to find Travelin' Guy's ID, which he had left in the pocket of the pants he'd slung over a chair in his office, and take it down to the lobby for him so he could get to a meeting he was late for. (Me, loudly, as I handed him the badge in our lobby: "Y'know, I'm pretty sure my job description doesn't include fishing through your pants pockets."
) It's been wall-to-wall busy ever since -- except for taking an inadvertently long lunch (service was slooow) for a co-worker's birthday.
Oh, and someone gave me theater tickets for tonight.
The show is a musical called "Brother Russia" and it's having its premiere here in DC. Reviews indicate the show is kind of middling, but the price is right.
So Magickmaker and I are gonna go.
