If you haven't got a Furls Fire icon, go get one from the store. Then go to the "Items" button below the KW banner at the top of the page. Check the box in the left column for any icon (up to three) you want to show in your posts. I just did it myself, so it should show in mine. If it doesn't, get someone else to tell you how to do it......
Unless Peter wants the icon in his signature, which links to the tribute thread for Furls. If that's the case, cut and paste the following in to the signature box under "profile:"

Code: Select all

Come participate in the Bad Writing Contest in Mallorys then! We are just 3 or 4 of us each week. This week has a prize of 1000 WGD. We need more people to join us!

You can have a whole bunch, but you can only display three at a time.

Which reminds me, I should go through my stash...

Nice contests you had here since I visited here last time, Wayfriend. A lot of pages under the bridge. :D Your intimate knowledge of Donaldson's series awes me.

Well, I have a lot of white gold dollars to give away. So let's do it again.

Five contestants will compete against each other, through successive rounds of elimination, until only one contestant remains. They battle for cash and prizes totalling more than 11,000 WGD.

Each round, contestants will strive to complete their task more successfully than their fellow contestants. Each round, the Staff of Immunity will be awarded by the host somewhat randomly. Each round, the audience will vote off one of the contestants. The last contestant not voted out of the Great Swamp wins.

The winner will receive the 10,000 WGD first place prize. The runner up will receive $1,000 WGD. Third place: 100 WGD; fourth: 10; last and totally least: 1.

You can see how the previous game went by going here.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

To be one of the five contestants, you need to be one of the five winners of the following pre-game contest.

The Giant's Passage
  • The Giants, who knew how to be wary, had always been able to travel freely through the Flat, and they had kept paths open for others, so that the crossing of the Sarangrave was not normally a great risk.

But now something else met the gaze of the mission. Slumbering evil stirred ...

In the dawn of the ninth day the mission rode eastward across the grassland foothills toward the main Giantway through the Sarangrave.
In this test, candidates for the game must find the best Giant passage - they must post their favorite Chronicles passage which is about Giants. Find those few lines of text which tell us all what you love (or hate) about Donaldson's largest people. (But no Last Chronicles please.)

When all the entries are in, the five winners will be chosen based on how well chosen their passages are, how well they can copy text without spelling errors, wit, wisdom, and audience participation.

These five winners will win entry into the Survivor: Sarangrave main event, where they are guaranteed to win something.

I deem the scene by the wightbarrow in WGW, where Pitchwife tells the following to the First, collects together all their wonderful qualities: honor, courage, steadfastness, loyalty, love, and laughter. Somewhat abridged.

At that, Pitchwife burst into a spasm of coughing. A moment passed before Covenant realized that the malformed Giant was trying to laugh. [...]
"I am proud of you beyond all endurance. Demean not your high courage with foolishness. Neither Earthfriend nor Chosen [...] will fail. I am sworn to you in love and fealty, and I will remain."

There are so many, but I will choose from our introduction to these folk, as my Love for them evolves from our initial exposure to them:
"We cannot forget.

"But in the old lore-legend, the children of the Creator had hope. He put rainbows in our sky after cleansing rains, as a promise to the stars that somehow, someday, he would find a way to bring them home.

"If we are to survive, we must find the Home that we have lost, the heartland beyond the Sunbirth Sea."

[snip]

We set our sails to to resail our track;
but the winds of life blew not the way we chose,
and the land beyond the Sea was lost.

[snip]

Softly, the Giant said, "Laugh, Thomas Covenant--laugh for me. Joy is in the ears that hear."

“We had become the thing we hate. We are better dead.”

“Nevertheless!” Korik said. “Is this the fealty of the Giants? Does all promised faithfulness come to this? By the Vow, Giant! You destroy yourselves, and let the evil live! Even Kevin Landwaster was not so weak.”

In his emotion, he forgot caution, and all the Bloodguard were taken unaware. The sudden voice behind them was cold with contempt; it cut through them like a gale of winter. Turning, they found that another Giant stood in the doorway. He was much younger than the Giant within, but he resembled the older Giant. The chief difference lay in the contempt that filled his face, raged in his eyes, twisted his mouth as if he were about to spit.

In his right hand, he clenched a hot green stone. It blazed with an emerald strength that shone through his fingers. As he gripped it, it steamed thickly.

He stank of fresh blood; he was spattered with it from head to foot. And within him, clinging to his bones, was a powerful presence that did not fit his form. It slavered from behind his eyes with a great force of malice and wrong.

When Covenant, Linden, Sunder and Hollian have travelled with the Giants of the Search to the outskirts of Coercri and first glimpse the long-deserted home of the Seareach Giants, Pitchwife begins to sing:
Let breakers crash against the shore --
let rocks be rimed with sea and weed,
cliffs carven by the storm --
let calm becalm the deeps,
or wind appall the waves, and sting --
and sting --
nothing overweighs the poise of Sea and Stone.
The rocks and water-battery of Home endure.
We are the Giants,
born to live,
and bold for going where the dreaming goes.

Let the world be wide beyond belief,
the ocean be as vast as time --
let journeys end or fail,
seaquests fall in ice or blast,
and wandering be forever. Roam --
and roam --
nothing tarnishes the poise of Sea and Stone.
The hearth and harborage of Home endure.
We are the Giants,
born to sail,
and bold for going where the dreaming goes.
Love prevails.

The first meeting of Covenant and Saltheart Foamfollower did it for me. (Come to think of it, Foamfollower's ability to get Covenant to tone down his rage, simply by refusing to become angry, kind of foreshadows Covenant's victory by laughter over Foul at the end of TPTP. Hunh.)
Foamfollower's question caught him wandering. "Are you a storyteller, Thomas Covenant?"

Absently, he replied, "I was, once."

"And you gave it up? Ah, that is as sad a tale in three words as any you might have told me. But a life without a tale is like a sea without salt. How do you live?"

Covenant folded his arms across the gunwales and rested his chin on them. As the boat moved, Andelain opened constantly in front of him like a bud; but he ignored it, concentrated instead on the plaint of water past the prow. Unconsciously, he clenched his fist over his ring. "I live."

"Another?" Foamfollower returned. "In two words, a story sadder than the first. Say no more -- with one word you will make me weep."

Agreed...ali's choice is the classic snippet of Foamfollower, who is for all of us the beloved exemplar of the Giants.

Hopefully those of us who decided to delve for less shiny (though deeply representative) gems -- and those who are yet to post because they are looking for something even more perfect -- will also find favor.
