If it comes down to picking what to migrate, I would suggest the SRD forums would be paramount -- since that's supposedly the purpose of the site ;) -- and then going down the list from there.

We've migrated the board before (cough*EZBoard*cough) and it didn't kill us....
Yeah, ali, I agree that the SRD stuff would be most important to migrate. It was sad to finally lose those old threads, though. Wish we'd archived them somehow.
Murrin wrote:I don't see a problem wiping Mallorys and starting over. It could even inject some life into it. On the other hand, I think having to ditch and restart the whole board to move to phpBB3 would kill the Watch.
Well, as ali said we did start over once before and it didn't kill us. Maybe we were a smaller, more dedicated group back then. ;) (Somehow I doubt that, though. :P) But I don't see any reason to kill everything. We can see what it's possible to migrate. (Would there be any way to archive stuff and make it "read only"? Or would that take up too much server space?)
aliantha wrote:Yeah, I suspect even the regular Tankards ;) wouldn't be too fussed to start with a clean slate. The discussions are usually dependent on the news of the day -- and for the perennials (like abortion), we start a new thread from time to time anyhow.
Yes, that's true, too.

To be perfectly honest, if there's something I want to save, I do save it myself somewhere. Things can either last longer or not as long as you want on the Intarwebs. ;)

Well I wasn't around for the EZboard, but I don't think it had been going for over 10 years with 3000 members and nearly 900,000 posts. It'll be harder for people to just pack up and move this time.

We could archive it, but I'm not sure what that'll do to the new place, since it'll probably be occupying a new table on the same SQL server (and the problems, IIRC, were down to the database being too big for the SQL server).

I am a techie of sorts, though not really experienced with phpbb, but it must just be phpmysql imports and a css edit to have this updated? I would be willing to help setting up a new phpbb install on a subdomain and importing the sql db to it before porting it to the root. I say help because I do not want to be in charge of it. I also wont be free for anything like that till about 5 or 6 weeks from now.

But either way pruning the tank, mallorys, gen disc, and others sounds like a really good idea.

Does anyone currently make backups of the db on a regular basis?

If you move the forum, please migrate the whole gallery forum and Laborium. The discussions and pictures are the only reffs and visuals we have about TCTC in the whole net. Archive.org doesn't include that kind of things possibly due to bandwidth issues. Personally I was very saddened by the main site's downtaking last spring, just when I was perusing the cover galleries for references. Hadn't saved them on my computer, and now that content cannot be found anywhere.

theland.antgear.com/ is still around with a lot of stuff like covers. Not all the stuff Kevinswatch had, though.

Also the Albums. It would be nice to keep the photographic proof of E-fests, etc.

Altho the pictures might be part of the problem with the database size...tho we haven't been adding a ton of them lately.

Ananda, I sure hope there's somebody here who can translate what you said. I could tell it was English, but it was some weird dialect I don't speak. ;)

The Album won't translate: it's a custom mod added to the board, it won't match up with what phpBB3 has. Support for the mod probably ended long ago, too. On the server all the files have unintelligible numeric names that won't make it possible to identify who posted them, when, and what they were labelled.

Damn. :( Come to think of it, this may be part of what stopped us the last time the subject of migration came up. I mean, the sheer size of the database was the main thing, but I think I'm remembering now the discussion about the pictures.

You could move this board to a subdomain and link to the album from the updated site and just open the link in a new window and lock the old forum so no new posts are allowed.

If the Album turns out really not possible to migrate, it's just that the most important pictures will have to be saved and re-uploaded manually, with the original author's name. Or it can be just archived.

And, though I'd rather see everything saved and remaining, i mostly agree on the fact the main things are the SRD forums and the Album, and certain specific threads in other forums, however, I think the Hall also must be preserved.

And in English - Ananda offered help) Well, about that much translates to English))

Also, my knowledge of phpbb is likely far below the one that Ananda possesses, even though I made a forum on it (mostly from ready-made parts, of course), but if my help may be useful anyhow - I'm more than willing to try)

If the album requires manual transferring, I'm willing to help with that within the limits of my free time. Labeling, saving files, that kind of thing. Also I'm quite sure some free tools for downloading larger amounts of website content exist somewhere. I would definitely like to see the whole Laborium saved from total obliteration.

Yet also having some time issues: could begin somewhere around mid-July, but not before.

Well, all of this is dependent on whether Vain is willing and able to make the transfer, isn't it? And we don't know what Vain's time constraints are.

Also, I imagine Jay would want something to say about it.

Keep the dissections and hall of gifts. Everything else is expendable.
"It is not the literal past that rules us, save, possibly, in a biological sense. It is images of the past. Each new historical era mirrors itself in the picture and active mythology of its past or of a past borrowed from other cultures. It tests its sense of identity, of regress or new achievement against that past.”

I don't.

I haven't seen artworks by either you or [Syl] in the Chrons Gallery. May I ask you to make a few, preferably taking a few days to complete, or better a few weeks? Even a dissection usually doesn't take that much in the simple time measurement, and worse, an artwork is completely irreplaceable. And that's just to start with.

Don't worry, I won't be able to make you create an artwork)

And I tried to find a few of the old things from the kw site and the old boards recently. Well, you could predict the result. So, I'd like to see what is present now preserved as much as possible, so it was more like my general opinion on the cutting off thing.

I agree with Syl, keep the Hall of Gifts. and I assume the dissections are about the SRD books? then keep those as well.

and maybe a couple Zeph posts, for old times sake.
