Who has been trying to charge you $68 to publish a Kindle version? Kindle Direct Publishing does it for free. Is it because you're not in the US?
When I first published BBW last year, they wanted $68 to make it available as a Kindle on Amazon. I was broke, so I put the e-book version on Smashwords. I don't know when KDP started doing it for free, but I just became aware of it.
That's crazy.

I did notice this year that when I put "Seized" up at CreateSpace, they were pushing me hard at the end of the process to publish a Kindle version, too. I bailed out of the hard sell because I already had a Kindle version, which I'd published through KDP before I reformatted the book for the paperback version.
I wonder whether the $68 wasn't for the CreateSpace design team to reformat the paperback as an e-book. But if you've already got an e-book file that Smashwords will accept, you don't have to do that -- you can just take out all the Smashwords references and put it up at KDP for free.
Anyway, the cheering still stands!
