A question of realism
A question often raised about Sci-Fi stories is the level of realism required – or preferred. Interesting, how much does that concern people here? I'm usually fine with the most unrealistic science, maybe because I think many of the things unrealistic for a Sci-Fi story could well turn out to exist in real life.

A lot of times (not all the time) when I see a reader bring up realism, it more has to do with how they see human nature, and not that what is going is or is not realistic. Nowadays, it seems, something isn't 'realistic' enough unless it involves gritty violence, incense, and lots and lots and lots and lots of politicking.

I tend to find things categorized as "realism," boring for the most part.
But to the point of the question, I don't care about realism IF the author clearly establishes the milieu AND maintains internal coherence/integrity throughout.
I DO have several other peeves/nits about realism [some in parallel with what O said]...but that's a different topic.

the difference between evidence and sources: whether they come from the horse's mouth or a horse's ass.
"Most people are other people. Their thoughts are someone else's opinions, their lives a mimicry, their passions a quotation."
the hyperbole is a beauty...for we are then allowed to say a little more than the truth...and language is more efficient when it goes beyond reality than when it stops short of it.
