I finally finished up His Dark Materials, and found it to be a great read. I am reading the tiny little companion book now, Lyra's Oxford. Then will come a mystery book someone lent me, and then I think I am going to read some short stories by Ursula K. Le Guin...
I'm taking a break from fantasy, and after seeing Master And Commander - The Far Side Of The World at the cinema I thought I'd give the Patrick O'Brian books a go.
They're very enjoyable so far (4.5 down, 15.5 to go), to the extent that I'm chain reading. The local bookshops have run out though, and 6 and 7 are on order, so whether that'll continue once I've gone cold turkey I just don't know.
And it seems a little strange to me to make a film from books 1 (Master and Commander) and 10 (The Far Side Of The World) in a series, set 10 years or more apart.
I just finished an exciting and unusual sci fi called SKIN. It is mainly adventure, but it required author McMann to understand genetic technology to a degree. The author did a good job of imagining "what-ifs". Check Awe-Struck E-books for it in March.
Now picking up HP AND THE GOBLET OF FIRE.

I was in the bookshop to day and I spotted the Scavenger trilogy by KJ Parker. I'd never heard of the books nor the author before, but it looked ok so I picked up 'Shadow', the first book. I'm not really expecting anything special, but I'm hoping it'll at least be a good read.
Finished 'Shadow' and 'Pattern' - very interesting read, despite one or two minor inconsistencies between the two books. I'll start 'Memory' on monday.
Am reading Niven's Destiny's Road at the mo. Someone mentioned Maturin earlier. As in Charles Robert?
The reality is in this head. Mine. I'm the projector at the planetarium, all the closed little universe visible in the circle of that stage is coming out of my mouth, eyes, and sometimes other orifices also.
On SRD's recommendation I picked up a copy of Patricia McKillup's The Riddle~Master of Hed which I plan to read shortly. Deth, the High One's Harper looks like an interesting character indeed and, I believe, it's the first of a trilogy.

Love those books! They are on my reread list for this year.
I am working on the Farseer Trilogy by Robin Hobb. She is very good at writing in depth characters -- and is even harder on them than George RR Martin is!
