16 Sequels Nobody Has Ever Heard Of

OK, maybe some of you are familiar with some of these. But how many of these questionable sequels have you actually seen?

1. Ace Ventura, Jr.
Josh Flitter played Ace Ventura, Jr. in this 2009 spin-off of the original series that starred Jim Carrey. While Carrey isn’t in this film, he and Flitter do share one movie credit: both were in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

2. National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation 2: Cousin Eddie’s Island Adventure
According to an informal survey done here at the office, most people are aware this film exists, but nobody has actually seen it. Can anyone share a review?

3. American Psycho 2
Mila Kunis and William Shatner star in this straight-to-DVD sequel to the Christian Bale hit.

4. Road House 2
This straight-to-DVD sequel, which clocks in at under 90 minutes, came out seventeen years after the original.

5. Legally Blondes
Reese Witherspoon, the star of the first two Legally Blonde movies, produced this third film but did not act in it. Instead, the film stars British twins who play cousins of Witherspoon’s original character.

6. Home Alone 4: Taking Back the House
Supposedly, this film would have led to a Home Alone TV series had it been well-received.

7 & 8. Cruel Intentions 2 & 3
Amy Adams starred in Cruel Intentions 2, which was supposed to be a prequel of sorts to the original. Meanwhile, the only connection between the original—starring Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Philippe, and Reese Witherspoon—and Cruel Intentions 3 appears to be that the writer of the third’s last name is Reese.

9. Open Water 2: Adrift
When this script was first written, it was not in any way related to Open Water. But when that film did well in the box office, they decided to repackage Adrift as an Open Water sequel.

10. Road Trip: Beer Pong
Actress Rhoda Griffis, who played “Tour Group Mom” in the 2000 film Road Trip, was cast as “Filthy Mom” in the 2009 sequel. According to IMDb, the producers did not realize she was in the original when they cast her in Road Trip: Beer Pong.

11. Save the Last Dance 2
R&B performer Ne-Yo’s first film role was in this straight-to-DVD sequel.

12. Dr. Doolittle: Million Dollar Mutts
This is the fifth movie in the Dr. Dolittle reboot that began in 1998, and it’s the third in the series to go direct-to-DVD and not actually feature the titular doctor in the film.

13. Bambi II
Technically, this 2006 film is not a sequel. It’s called a “midquel” because it begins somewhere in the middle of the original Bambi story.

14. Behind Enemy Lines: Colombia
Ken Anderson, the wrestler known as “Mr. Kennedy” is not actually the star of this movie. Nor was the film shot in Colombia. (It was filmed in Puerto Rico.)

15. War of the Worlds 2
This is the sequel to H. G. Wells’ The War of the Worlds, which came out in 2005, not the Steven Spielberg film War of the Worlds, which also came out in 2005.

16. I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer
This third I Know What You Did Last Summer film has a 0 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

1) the Psycho II film, and only because of Kunis.

Browsing the aisles of Movie Trading Company, I am aware of Christmas Vacation 2, American Psycho 2, Road House 2, Legally Blondes, Home Alone 4, Open Water 2, Save the Last Dance 2, Bambi 2, and IAKWYDLS.

Thankfully, I have not seen any of them. I don't plan to, either.

The only awful sequels I really want to see are Phantasm 3 through 5, but they are incredibly difficult to find, even at MTC.

Being a fan of the Christmas Vacation film I tried to watch C Vacation 2 but failed after only a few minutes of screen time.

As for the rest they are in the "never heard of" category for obvious reasons.

There's a ton of crappy straight to DVD Disney sequels. To my shame, I have seen three Aladdin movies. Also there are sequels to Little Mermaid, the Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, the Hunchback of Notre Dame, and probably others. None of which I've seen, but from the looks of it they usually feature offspring of the main characters of the original.

since they took Blockbuster away i haven't had a chance to see exactly how many bad sequels there are...

I've seen the first three Aladdin films (Return of Jafar, the first sequel, wasn't bad. King of Thieves isn't worth seeing). I didn't realise there were more Lion King films until a couple of months ago, when one of them was on TV (it was the events of the original, from the perspective of Timon and Pumbaa. It was awful).

I would also add:
Return of the Jedi--arguably a better movie with a more mature plot than original Star Wars...but only the original theatrical release, not the trollingly-enhanced stupid edition with extra CGI crap thrown in.

The Spy Who Loved Me--Roger Moore's third outing as James Bond, featuring the debut of Richard Kiel's Jaws, the only henchman Bond never managed to kill (we won't count May Day, who killed herself); a close tie for Moore's best Bond film with The Man With The Golden Gun

Once Upon a Time in Mexico--the third "El Mariachi" film by Robert Rodriguez (but only the second time the title character was played by Antonio Banderas; the original El was Carlos Gallardo). The movie co-stars Selma Hayak even though her character is already dead by the time this movie begins; I can't think of too many movies where this is the case. Good action sequences and typical RR weirdness. Also contains the usual RR suspects--Danny Trejo, Mickey Rourke, Cheech Marin, Eva Mendes...but also Enrique Iglesias, Willem DaFoe and Johnny Depp.

Other than that I am drawing a blank right now. Usually by the third film a movie franchise has completely lost the magic that made the first film worth watching as the studio tries to squeeze one final dollar out of it.

Technically, the events of OUATIM follow the events of Desperado, which follows the events in the original El Mariachi (which I have seen). Thus, OUATIM is the third in the series. At least, I am fairly certain that Desperado is not simply an El Mariachi remake--I don't think RR would remake his own film.

No, TSWLM is not technically the third Bond film, but it is the third Roger Moore as Bond film. Thin reasoning, yes, but I counted it as the third in that series.

A lot of people were turned off by Matrix: Revolutions. I think their problem was that they were shooting it simultaneously with Reloaded when they could have taken another year and made a slightly better film. Hindsight, of course, allows us to ask questions like "why didn't Smith/Bane use a gun?".

Return of the King, although the third in a trilogy, doesn't really so much feel like a third part so much as simply Act III in the same long story, like the novels. It doesn't get included in the list of sequels.

Toy Story 3 is not only an awesome third movie, I'd argue it's a better film than its predecessors.

Haven't seen a single one from the list in the first post - and I have suspicions I haven't lost much.

And the law of diminishing does work well - it's just that there are exceptions, many already enlisted here)

I think maybe Back To The Future Part III should also be mentioned - perhaps it may not qualify for being initially planned together with the previous two parts, but I'm not sure on that.

Oh. Looks like I have to stand up and wave the Necronomicon a bit. For the Army of Darkness, of course - it's properly insane, Lovecraft-referencing and not taking itself seriously.

The others I don't know well enough to recommend or not - perhaps I should check them out when I have time - except for Die Hard With a Vengeance. It's in a genre I'm not much interested in, but well done and generally can be watched and enjoyed.

Being the father of a 7 year old girl I had to watch Lion King 3 (aka Lion King 1 1/2) and felt like hitting my own head repeatedly with blunt objects.

Also pretty useless though commercially often more successful than their forerunners:

Blues Brothers 2000
All Alien sequels (when compared to the original movie)
Mad Max sequels
Star Wars I-III (yeah, I know they are prequels)
Highlander II (someone seriously should get killed for that deplorable piece of @*'#!)
Hellraiser IV-VIII (the first two were sublime)

Actually it's easier to name sequels I liked, liuke Cube II and Hypercube or The Naked Gun series ...

I actually saw Bambi II, we bought it by accident from the Disney Movie Club (forgot to cancel the selection that month). And I'd never seen the original, being too old for it.

My reaction? Once I'd watched the original... The second was actually better.
